@Marylee H, thank you so much! A photo of the front of the house is below (please forgive the overgrown trees). The brick seems brown-ish to me but has tones of a red "clay" / orangish look and the trim was painted a tan color when we purchased the home. I can tell that the original color was a blue based on areas where the paint is coming off.

I think I'd like to lighten things up a bit if possible and put a bolder color on the door.

Anyone's assistance is much appreciated.

I think trim would look very good in black. I'd also upgrade garage door with a carriage house style with a rich wood finish. Front door in same wood tone as garage door. It would give house a French Country look. Brick is beautiful!

@ashtonchic, thank you. I'm thinking darker would really make things pop though black feels like a bold move. I'm really struggling as from a distance the house looks "brown" but up close the brick has rust w/ grayish blues mixed in (see above pic).

Others have suggested going lighter (like a cream color). What do you think of that?

Newly divorced and the ex is the one that would make these decisions and I'm strug-guh-ling. It HAS to be repainted.

Any other thoughts?

Sorry about your divorce - make sure and take care of yourself. RE: the house. The brick exterior looks quite light in the picture and very pretty. Not sure about cream, it might make the colors look muddy. I think white would be better. The grout and the greyish blues in the brick would suggest a cool color.

If you can arrange it, I would take out the hedges and maybe even the trees. The house color will look different with them gone. Then a bright blue door?

@ashtonchic thank you so much. I am certainly trying but everything is still new and fresh and life has been an adjustment for sure. This was an unexpected repair that is turning in to parts of the exterior home having to be replaced. I found this color palette from Sherwin Williams, let me know what you think. I know little about colors but I see elements of these in the brick and the home is currently painted similar color to that tan.

@ashtonchic and yes, the front will be newly landscaped next year.

With the dark brown roof, you're better off sticking with the tan/beige color you currently have. That also blends better with your brick. That leaves you free to use an accent color on the door. You could use green, blue, or red for the door. Also cut down the large hedge in front of your big window, or remove it entirely if it's too overgrown. I would also landscape the square area on the inside of the walkway toward your house. New landscaping would lighten and brighten everything, and add the interest you may be looking for.

You picked out a stunning color palette. If you want the trim to blend in like the tan does, you should go with what is on there now. I prefer trim to be an accent color like the blue that was on the trim under the tan - so it will add a pop of color. I don't know who put the blue on - is it the original color? Also, I can't tell what color the roof is, is it brown or gray?

Your brick is very nice so whatever you choose will be fine.

@ashtonchic, the blue is the original color. It's almost a country blue. The roof is brown as well. Do you think that "Riverway" would be too bold for trim? Or what about the Tradewind (light gray) as a trim with the door painted the color of Riverway?

I'd almost hate to just come back with a basic tan.

I would get some samples of both and paint some boards that you can hold up next to the bricks and see what you like best. It's hard to tell on a computer screen so I can't really advise you.

You can use Riverway or Trade wind for the door color. If you don't want to use tan for the trim, look at a darker brown to match the roof. You don't have trim on your house other than the roofline, getters, and garage doors. Why would you want a line of blue in those areas, that doesn't relate to anything else? You could also look at olive greens if you don't want tan. Stick with natural colors that will look much better with brick than blue.

Looked at another pallete and I think I'm going to stick with the original color with cream accents to lighten up the door and (maybe) touch up the garage. Also, a lot of people have suggested a blue door to me which I might entertain until I can replace it with wood and am going to have a wood garage door installed at the suggestion of a lot of people. What do you guys/gals think?

@calidesign thank you for your input as well. I missed your comment yesterday but have been in dialogue with a lot of people (including a real estate agent friend of mine) and they pointed out that the brown roof changes the game. Most people suggested that I stick with the original color of the house (tan) or go with a cream so I found another color palette that had tan, cream and the rust/clay colors in it.

I'm going to trim the house in the original tan color and attempt to paint the shaded area under the front door cream because I hate how it looks boring with the current tan color scheme. Also, my sister picked the color of blue (which you and several others suggested to add color).

Also, going to have a new garage door installed and my sister suggested trying to trim the front door in the same color as the garage. End result posted above, let me know what you think.

I think it's a great idea to stick to the tan trim/gutters, the cream around the door works, and the blue door is fine if you like that. For the garage door - do not get wood. Wood is very heavy and expands/contracts. You'll continually be replacing the garage door opener and needing adjustments. I also would not get a wood-look door since you already have texture from your brick. I do like the darker brown garage door though, painted the color you show above. The brown color relates well to your roof and keeps the focus on other parts of your house.

@calidesign, thank you! You just saved me thousands on not having to purchase a new garage door. =) My real estate agent friend suggested I try using a gel stain and doing a faux wood look which I will try first before I just paint over it. I'm going to try the blue door for a pop of color though I'm not sold on it and can repaint it as many times/colors as I want.

A few questions:

Would you do a different color around the door or would you just do tan in that area as well?

What other colors would you consider painting the door?

Any other color schemes that go with the Ligonier Tan that you might consider?

I wouldn't use the gel stain on the garage door. A regular paint job on the garage door is so much better than a faux wood finish. You have textures from the brick and the roof tiles, and don't need the garage door to have more. I think the color combinations you're considering are fine. With the tan trim and brown garage door, you can use cream for the front door, or a deeper shade of blue, olive green, or clay. I'd paint all the trim tan first, along with the brown garage, and then afterward choose the front door color and whether or not you want cream around the door.
