Learned two new word. Mullions and muntins. Watching “Home Town” when they were restoring windows.

We had carrels in our high school library when I attended and then when I went to University we had them in the library there.

Ah yes, mullions and muntins...and people often get them confused.

When I worked at the University of Pennsylvania library, the students had carrels to study in. Some were reserved for them and others were first come, first served. I remember study carrels from when I was I college, too.

I will have to pay attention to any new words today.

I seem to be forgetting more words lately than ones that I am learning😞

I'm still trying to improve my vocabularies in German, Spanish, and Italian. Lately, I have been paying attention to the difference between Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft. I used to get these words confused.

I subscribe to A-Word-A-Day, which can often really stretch my mind. Not sure how many I recall the next day, but it's fun.

The first time I encountered 'carrel' was in the library at university. Immediately associated it with 'corral' because of the similarity between spelling & meaning.

And I was told (right or wrong) that the sill of the window is the part that is under the sash to the outside. The part you put flower pots on is the stool.

When I was a kid and heard The Night Before Christmas line about threw up the sash, I imagined that he was, you know, throwing up.

Today I had a coincidence with words I don’t see often. One answer in the NYT mini crossword is flouting and then the Jumble had flaut as an answer. I always thought the word was flout. I looked it up and either spelling is correct and they mean the same thing, to refuse to respect or obey. So that was my vocabulary lesson for the day.

I like knowing specific terms. I think it makes communicating more precise....but only if the person I’m talking to also knows the same terms! 😄

I always get mixed up between stalagmites and stalagtites. Not that I use them in daily conversations!

I had to look up Dutch baby after reading the aaaaah thread.

Stacey_mb, the ones that form from the top are stalactites. I always remember because of the c in the spelling which reminds me of ceiling.

New words for me this week are pareidolia and apophenia. I also spent some time trying to understand the difference/meaning of portamento and melisma.

Dedtired, I answered that Jumble as "fault".

I find new words since I read a couple of books a week but never heard of carrel. I did know muntins and mullions because I live in an 1840 house with over 40 windows.

I remember having this argument as to which was which with a friend. I let him win in his ignorance, I knew I was right. :)

I know carrel from the study desks in the library. The best thing was to hope that you could get an assigned study carrel in Main Stacks by the time you were in third year.

At a teacher's suggestion, I signed up HERE and received a daily new word email. For lots of years. Then, changed ISPs and didn't renew my address, I'm not sure why. Some days the word wouldn't be new ;0)....but many times they were. Something I'd use in conversation? Not necessarily....
