Spiral staircase and railing help!
Comments (7)I actually started with staircase builders but didn't have much luck, unfortunately. I called each staircase company in Salt Lake City to see about cutting off the busy scroll work or replacing the whole staircase. I received only one call back, but they no-showed for the appointment, so I moved on to flooring places, hoping to get at least a halfway solution. (Side note: I also called a contractor and a designer, but neither was interested--I'm assuming it's too small a project since it is new stairs/flooring/countertops/backsplash and not a whole house? What is the threshold at which you can hire someone to help with remodeling? 50k? 100k? Or is Home Depot your only resource unless you're high end or commercial...arggh so tired, so sore--if there are any ladies out there who are reading this, just buy some new, pretty, cookie cutter home...avoid this older house remodeling hell...anyhoo, venting over...) Do you have to worry about any sort of expansion concerns with concrete? Or do you just pour it in and level it and let it cure? Is there any sort of primer you have to put in the metal before you pour in the concrete?...See MoreZuri Deck- what handrail- help!
Comments (3)What railing did you end up going with? We are having Zuri pecan installed right now and I can't decide on a railing. We may go with cedar and have the railing painted to match or compliment the fascia on our house. Any thoughts?...See MoreStairway Handrail Help Please
Comments (18)Lyndee Lee: Center city Philadelphia is filled with old, old houses (well, old by American standards--pre-Revolution), some quite small with very small winder staircases. In some of them there is a vertical grab bar as you describe, but my favorite solution is a very thick rope. It just suits the age of the houses. And, if you look carefully, above the front door, you will sometimes see a 'mattress slot'. The floor above is removable between two beams so that mattresses could be lifted up there; they can't go around the winder staircase....See MoreColumn and Railing Help (also what style house is this?)
Comments (8)I am far from an expert. I have seen similar houses, all quite old, but I don't think they have earned any designation as a particular style. I do think that more substantial pillars and railings would balance the overhang and garage roof. Go more vintage looking but definitely not ornate. Landscaping will help, as would replacing the lower level light fixtures with ones a bit larger. I even think that this house could wear shutters well, but it doesn't look like there really is enough room between window and lights for them. So instead, I would look at adding more substantial trim around the doors and windows. If you have the money and are willing, I also would replace the doors. These (with the small half moon windows) just don't look right....See MoreHolly Revels
