Need help IDing Heirloom bean seeds from before 1939
Comments (3)Perhaps some of these links will help you. Good luck! Gary Mennonite Purple Stripe - An old heirloom from the Waterloo Mennonites of Waterloo, ON. The long pods are white with purplish mottling and are excellent as snaps or for dry beans. Very productive and early for a pole bean. (70 days for snaps) http://www.heritageharvestseed.com/pages/catalogue4.html Peregion - An heirloom bean from Oregon that can be used as a snap when small or as a dried bean later on. The small oval seed is beige with dark stripes and some seed is dark brown or black. The dried beans keep their color when cooked and are excellent as a soup bean or for baking. The plants produce quite a bit of runners and would do better with some support. Planting this bean at the base of corn stalks would be ideal. Very productive. (95 days for dried beans) Bush. http://www.heritageharvestseed.com/pages/catalogue5.html Refugee - A very old bean believed to have been brought to England by French Huguenots. This bean was also canned commercially in the early 1900âÂÂs in Ontario. The 1908 McKenzie Seed Catalog states that the Refugee bean is âÂÂAn immense producer and valuable for pickling.â The green pods are striped and contain small pinkish beige seed mottled with black. Some dark seed among the others is normal. A very productive and early bush bean. Can be used as a very tasty snap bean when young or as a dried bean. Very dependable and disease resistant. One of the most productive beans available. (80 days for dry beans) Bush. http://www.heritageharvestseed.com/pages/catalogue6.html Painted Lady (1600s) - Runner beans were introduced into England in 1633. A bicolor sort was one of the varieties known at the time. The Painted Lady Runner Bean has red and white bicolor flowers that are very ornamental. As with the other Runner Bean varieties, hummingbirds also are attracted to these flowers. (115 days for dry beans) Pole. http://www.heritageharvestseed.com/pages/catalogue8.html Heritage Plants Database - Seeds of Diversity Canada Bean - Varieties Sold in Canada http://www.seeds.ca/hpd/csci.php?species=Bean Southern Seed Legacy http://www.uga.edu/ebl/ssl/activities/seedlist/ South Carolina Foundation Seed Association -- Heirloom List http://virtual.clemson.edu/groups/seed/heirloom.htm John Coykendall who lives in Knoxville, TN is the most knowledgeable person I know who is an expert on Bean varieties. Comments (21)Thanks all! We are definitely open to looking for something to replace the media cabinet, but have looked intermittently over the years and had a hard time finding something that closes (DH feels strongly about this aesthetically, and we also have young kids so the out-of-sight-out-of-mind thing is very valuable for both safety and sanity) and is deep enough to accommodate the receiver, tuner, etc.--many of the newer pieces made for flat screen tvs seem to either be intended as bases with the tv out in the open, or do close but are quite shallow. I'll take another look around and see if anything new is out there, though! @roarah, thanks for the photos--your space is beautiful (and I love the window seats!) I can show DH and see if it's worth revisiting the tv on the mantel idea. We'd looked at hanging it rather than just setting it on the mantel, so maybe that would make a difference. We do have a 40" tv and replacing it is not in the cards, though. We've been considering what I think is normal-sized furniture--current sofa is 84" and you might be able to tell from the photos/plan that it has quite a big of space in the room (there's room between the sofa and the bookcase for a light and a side table), so thinking if we go with an 81" sofa (one option in a design I like) that would be a good bet if we keep it on that wall and then get a slightly smaller one (72") to form an L. If we go with chairs instead of one sofa/loveseat--and I do like that look in roarah's room--I'll have to rethink that a bit, though. Off to play with Homestyler--thanks for that tip!...See MoreNeed help with drapes and area rugs in open concept bungalow
Comments (3)I would cover all 3 windows with the same fabric and hang at the same height. This approach keeps an even sight line around the room. While you don't "have" to sew panels together, it will give the drapes a more finished look, hems will be even, etc. Lots of readers will suggest area rugs better than me. I would prioritize the rug first though. Pretty room....See Morepainting living and dining room in very small bungalow
Comments (11)I totally agree with RL Relocation. A light color (doesn't have to be white or off white) will highlight the great woodwork and floors, which are a signature feature of your bungalow. There are lots of blues and greens out there that would work - and you don't have to limit yourself to those two - if you happen to love lavender for example. You have already looked at a blue similar (but darker) to the blue in the lampshade - so that is a starting point. Also the green on that throw pillow. I suggest this a lot, but if it were my house I would also be looking for a nice complimentary color to put on the ceilings. Ceiling white is so boring and often really doesn't look good with the rest of the room. For example - my kitchen walls are a pale green-blue, with whitish trim, and on the ceiling I used Valspar Transparent (which doesn't look IRL anything like the color shown online, unless they have changed it since 2013). In the can it looks pale blue, but in my north facing room kitchen it is a soft warm greenish off white. There are lots of examples of rooms with colored ceilings on line-- take a look....See Moreorriepickles
