Final debate. What’s for dinner?

Settling in to watch the final debate after a yummy dinner of sea scallops, risotto and asparagus. Oh, and plenty of wine! What did you have for dinner? Share your photos!

Your scallops look yummy.

Hot dogs, baked beans, coleslaw and pasta salad. Trying to use the grill as much as possible before our single-digit temps on Sunday. No pics of the plates, it's all gone.

What a B_E_A_U_T_I_F_U_L nightmare! I love seaside flowers. What a spectacular view! My grandmother's family was originally from old Devonshire and moved to Wexford, Ireland. In the late 18th century, they came to America and settled in Virginia and Maryland. My branch ended up in California by the early 1850s, and hence, that is my native state. One of the grand-Aunts had tons of Crocosmias and I have always loved them since my childhood. The soil there was rich and deep with the leaf mold from the live oaks and sycamores. Awesome soil. I have a little bungalow style country cottage in Oklahoma now. It is situated upon a high ridge of sandstone and the only moist places I have are right up against my Koi pond and around the two smaller "reflecting pools". They wouldn't spread far on my arid, sandy soil. That is where I hope to establish them with my yellow flags. That would be a great combo of color. I bought some bulbs several years back, but they were too dried out by the time I got them planted, and did not grow. I will try again. Jim, perhaps you could make some of those twig wickets to set over them or perhaps make a hurdle (wattle) basket to set around them to keep them from flopping over. It would be a shame to remove such beauties from your garden. You could even use an old (or new) natural wicker basket with the bottom removed as a substitute. Secure it to the ground with some sturdy sticks. I think it would look really lovely. ~ just an idea. :) I was working outside yesterday, having one of our warms spells in midwinter, and discovered dozens of Bread Seed Poppies are already up. Just the tiniest plants now, but they will grow into tall plants and produce huge Red-Orange poppy flowers in mid-to-late spring. I love them. I transplanted some of the Black and Blue Salvia back there this fall, and that will look awesome when they are both in bloom this spring. I love ORANGE and red-orange flowers with blue flowers. Layout opinions please before final design

Thank you holligator! The hole in my kitchen floor finally got covered up and the monstrosity that held the oven has been removed. Now I can visualize the space a little better. I've downloaded a bunch of programs to try and see a plan in 3D but none of them will work with my laptop. I'm having a terrible time trying to visualize the layout altogether. I still like the first design so far because I think the Fridge will work the best in that corner. I can back it through the wall and have it line up with the cabinets. If it's in the other spots it will stick out too far. I'll have a better feel for that as well when it gets delivered next week. Here's what the space looks like right now: From Kitchen Design Would having the L on these two walls work? I'd have to make the island smaller unless I made the L into a horseshoe with seats on one side? OMG I'm driving myself crazy. From Kitchen Design Here's a view of the other side of the kitchen. a balcony/deck runs along side that wall. I think I'm just leery of closing the door up. Everyone keeps telling me to open the wall or take it down. Then I'd have nothing but open space and no where to put any artwork. It feels like a fishbowl with all these windows. Glenda, that's a lot of food, but with all 12 bringing a dish it doesn't take long to fill up a buffet. I'm surprised there were no desserts! Raven, everything sounds delicious. We ended up having sliced avocados last night because the mangoes weren't quite ready. Way to go, Jasdip. You're making space in the frig for more of your good cooking! Shirley, I looked for green beans in the grocery today and they were awful looking. I wanted green beans and red potatoes so bad!! Yep, I think we all love our leftovers and most of the time I think they taste better on day 2 (or 3).

Drywall debate with contractor, what to do?

There are 2 types of smooth finish in my midwestern market. "Ugly" and "Awesome". Ugly is about the same labor as orange peel & knock down (also called executive). Awesome smooth walls require leveling of drywall, complete skimcoat, and extensive attention to detail. Ugly is ugly because it ends up being really wavy and inconsistent. Especially true of old homes with previously plastered walls. The old lumber varied in thickness considerably and it was the job of the plasterer to level out these inconsistencies when he applied the mud. Drywall is the same thickness throughout and will not even out these differences. Smooth compounds this because it hides nothing. I've had some success with customers who get sticker shocked at smooth by switching to a very light orange peel. Not as awesome as smooth, but better than an orange peel. Still need to level the studs prior to installing the drywall though. Knockdown is the favorite of any drywaller due to the amount it hides. I've seen some pretty gnarly seam taping almost disappear when the k/d was applied. So in short, if you want smooth, be fine with paying extra for it or you might end up with ugly. Best of luck. Love scallops but Dh has developed some sort of allergy to them, so I haven't had them in awhile.

Dinner: Beyond burgers made in the LeCreuset grill pan on brioche bun with lettuce, tomato from the garden, onion; Alexia sweet potato fries and 2 onion rings.

We just had tomahawk steak, mash and roast potatoes, creamed spinach, green peppercorn cognac sauce and sautéed mushrooms with caramelized onion. To start we had organic tomatoes with fresh basil, burrata and vineaigrette. And, a fine cab😊

Steak is medium rare in the middle.

Here in the midwest we’ve already had dinner, tonight was veal brats, corn, and carrot slices. Chardonnay is the drink of choice. The problem is, we thought the debate was starting at 7, but like the SuperBowl and the Kentucky Derby, the actual event is at least an hour later than that. So we shall see if we are still sober by the end, or by the time it starts. Maybe that’s the best way to watch it, anyway.

We had leftover hamburgers and potato salad. I have to be at my poll watching shift by 6 am so I am going to bed instead of finishing the debate.

Too late for pictures, all gone! But I made chicken cashew for the first time in ages (my version is heavy on bell peppers and broccoli). Your scallops look amazing!

Split Pea Soup with chunks of ham. No debate for me....just can't....DH on zoom call with a friend he has a martini with every Thursday eve. All virtual since COVID except for once in our backyard with social distancing. They've done this for years. It's my quiet time :)
