Need help with paint colour for reddish/orange wood floors

hi there! I’ve been struggling to find a good paint colour that will compliment the floors and furniture in my family room. I have tried colours like SW accessible beige and tony taupe but they’re just not working. Does anyone have any suggestions?

You need a warm color for your walls for the warm color on your floor. Here are a few suggestions: Alluring White SW6343, Buff SW7683, Cottage Cream SW7678, Biscuit SW6112

Look at SW Evening Shadow (SW 7662) it is a nice light grey. The problem is if you are looking at a sample in a room that still has that some of that yellow/orange paint on the walls it will reflect the color and make the grey look different that what it will look like when the entire room is painted. Your floors will look better when all that yellow and orange are gone.

The living room trim doesn't look random because that trim is throughout the main level except for the master bedroom. The oak is what seems random to me because it's only there in the hallway, though in multiple areas (banister, wood column that's hiding an old chimney, and built-in shelves next to the column. The door stain is kind of random also. The whole has random elements because the previous owners really went to town with "upgrades", but they choose a lot of different finishes, so the main living area has four different wood colors between the door stain, walnut trim, the oak, and hickory cabinets in the kitchen. Maybe I can stain the oak to match the walnut trim at some point. I don't think the entryway shelves will look cluttered because there will be baskets on all of them to hold shoes etc. DH didn't want cupboards, and the kids would probably break doors on them anyway. It's hard to figure out what will eventually go and what won't. There's a whole lot that I'd like to replace/redo, but DH doesn't really want to do any of it, so... I'm leaning toward keeping the beadboard but painting it the wall color. I had a designer come today and she said beadboard would look ok if it was painted the wall color. Also, the dining room, which is visible from the entryway, has a narrow strip type of wainscoting that is reminiscent of beadboard, though stained walnut color, so I don't think it will look too out of place.

Where are you located? Is your roof a redish/orange tone? You need to work with that and then improve your landscaping too. I think a Sage green color would be very nice. Maybe a light cream if you want a more yellow look. But not a strong yellow. Yellows get strong very fast. So go two shades less strength on yellows.

I second BM Barren Plains. I have used it with mid-tone brown floors very similar to yours and it is a light but warm neutral greige. It may flash a tiny bit lavender in certain light situations but even that is very pretty with your floors. Usually, BM Barren Plains is a beautiful soft, warm greige, because it sits so close to the Yellow-Red Hue Family. You also need a larger rug with some color to break up all the brown. If you love the picture above your couch, pull colors from there for your rug and accessories.

Thanks so very much for your input!! i really appreciate the time taken by all of you :) @simplechoices would you still recommend barren plains if I use warm whites/off-whites in the rest of the house? Will it lean too much towards grey and clash with these colours? Also, as edgecomb grey is also a Greige, I believe, do you think it would suit this room?

Also do you have any suggestions for a warm white/off-white for a hallway and foyer area With the same wood Tone? I was thinking of using something like BM swiss coffee with chantilly lace as the trim

Since you mentioned Edgecomb Gray and BM Swiss coffee, I don't think you will like BM Barren Plain. It definitely acts more "Grey" and neutral because it is less chromatic. So even though they are fairly close in value and location on the color wheel, making both "warm", Barren Plains will look grey to you, by comparison. Your floors also live in the the Yellow-Red zone of the Hue Families, so Edgecomb Gray works with the floors, and because of it's higher Chroma, will not likely shift.

SW Pure White pairs better with both Edgecomb Gray and BM Swiss Coffee, IMO.

Personally, I find BM Swiss Coffee too cool for the floors. I will see if I can find something that is a little warmer.

Take a look at BM CC-50 White Down or SW Panda White instead of BM Swiss Coffee.

BM White Down: 3.34Y 8.89/0.97

SW Panda White: 2.29Y 8.89/ 0.92

If these are too chromatic for you, or you prefer lighter, let me know.

I’m loving both white down and panda white. I hadn’t come across these choices before and I think They’re perfect for my home. Do you know of any of them Have a tendency to look yellow? debating whether i need to go get samples of these colours

I am glad they are both good options for you. I like BM White Down with Edgecomb as well. SW Pure White looks good with both. Another option is a softer white is BM White Dove for the trim. It depends on what you like in your space. It's personal preference. SW Pure White will look whiter than BM Dove White. Both a good options. You can see on the graph below, the DNA of many popular white paints.

Always test colors in your personal space and light. Light affects color. Paint large sample boards instead of the wall and live with it for a few days. Place them near your floor, near a corner, move them around. Your current wall colors will affect how you see the new color, but large sample boards make it easy to make a decision.

Given where BM White Down lives, it gets it's warmth from it's proximity to the Yellow-Red Family. Your light may reveal a hint of peach, but more likely it will just be a warm white like you want.

Hi again,

I will definitely use the sample boards to test the colours. It’ll do like the way White dove looks but I think I’d prefer more of a contrast For the doors especially. But that’s a wonderful recommendation! Wondering what finishes you’d recommend for the trim/walls? I was thinking of satin for the trim and maybe eggshell for the Hallway/foyer walls as well as for the family room in edgecomb. Hoping that’ll work.

Definitely satin for the trim. I like Ulti-Matte for the walls, but it is not as friendly, it can burnish easily. I still use it because I like the soft finish. Eggshell is fine for walls too and is less "delicate".

If you decide you want an even "brighter" white without being as bright as Chantilly Lace, take a look at BM Simply White. I still prefer SW Pure White, but you may like something brighter.
