Comments (24)Replacing the tree in the front yard is on the next-year list. Your guess of Sorbus acucuparia was spot on; that's what this one is. It began as a multistem tree and is losing one trunk per year. I think voles may be eating the bark just below the soil surface. Now it has only one trunk that is leaning at an odd angle. So that will be replaced for certain, and perhaps the bed that contains it will be moved or reconsidered. No other trees are on the table for now. We have glorious mountain views and we have been very careful to frame them deliberately. In this case I'm much more concerned with the view from the house than the view of the house. The tree on the right in Yardvaark's photo would block a spectacular view. Of course, you had no way of knowing that. :) But rest assured, the front yard has generous clumps of aspen trees that do soften the overall look of the front yard. Also Yardvaark, it's pretty easy to reconcile liking the idea of a tree yet not actually wanting one. In the abstract, small trees look nice anchoring house corners. Yet in specific, in this particular case with the long and lean layout of the front porch, I prefer that to be left open. Make sense? That said, if I could find the perfect, small, well-behaved, interesting tree to put in the left corner of the foundation, I would consider it. I've always wondered about Hawthorne trees because they stay narrow. Deviant, I just love the look of that entryway patio and porch. That creates a very welcoming face on the house and is probably a lovely place to linger and socialize with the UPS guy. Thanks for sharing the photo. Thanks for the ideas and input, I am benefiting from the collective wisdom here. I am home from my trip now and will have a look at my space with fresh eyes....See MoreGift Giving Idea for Grandparents
Comments (4)Hi Melissa M, " ... a gift that I will benefit from and appreciate till the day I die". Who knows - maybe even beyond. Do you figure that the ones who couldn't play down here will automatically just know how to do it in the Great Beyond? How can there be satisfaction without effort expended? Humans are built to seek and accept challenges - and make something of them. Will that not be part of our nature after this life, do you think? Comments (18)I got my mom this atomic clock/weather station. Gives indoor/outdoor highs/lows for the last 12 hrs, predicts weather for next 12/24 hrs. They say it takes 14 days to set itself to predict weather, but mine started showing snow on screen on 3rd day, next morning we had snow. (Got one for myself, my LaCrosse bit the dust after 3 yrs). This is an Acu-Rite brand, super easy set up. I like it for her because the screen is big, easy to read. One "con" is no LCD contrast adjustment, has to be hung at a higher spot on wall so other background images don't "shadow" on the screen. (Tho it will also stand, like a picture frame.) Another great stocking stuffer are those $15 remote light switches. (Can't find a pic of one & need to head out now, but they are everywhere now, Walgreen's, Ace, big box stores). There are two kinds. You plug a lamp into the switch, then either operate the lamp from a push button remote or wall 'flip' switch you can install in a handy spot (double faced backing or small screws). My mom took a few tumbles, so I hooked one up to her bedside lamp and set remote on her bedside table. All she has to do is press remote now, rather than reach over for lamp's switch. Those have been so handy I've given her several, she loves them!...See MoreNeed ideas for a cheap yet hip top for an old desk
Comments (22)Thanks for all the suggestions. I just got back from a "scoping" trip to Home Depot. I did not see any solid core doors, but the hollow core ones I don't think would work, since I'd need to cut it down. I looked at the plywood and I guess something like that could work, but I didn't get anything yet. They also had particle board with a melamine coating for $20-something a sheet, but I'd need to do something with the edges. The plexiglass at HD was over $70 and kind of flimsy. At a local salvage store I stopped by on the way home, they had a piece of tabletop glass slightly bigger than I need. The guy offered it to me for $50. But it will over hang the base by a couple inches on each side. Does anyone know if it's possible to get a tempered glass tabletop cut down? Also, my dh is concerned that his optical mouse won't work on a glass top - does anyone know whether this is true?...See MoreIdaClaire
