Looking for feedback on kitchen design

Hi there!

Looking to get some feedback on our rough plans for a kitchen remodel. My husband and I are both big into neutrals (I find them calming), and I'm hesitant to do anything major like our backsplash in a colour because then we are stuck with it. Also, our kitchen isn't exactly a huge kitchen, but it's open concept to our living and dining, which is decorated in grey and the floors throughout our kitchen/living/dining are dark grey wood.

The things we've found that we like so far all tend to be white. Our backsplash would be white with dark grey grout (to tie in with the island), with white cabinets and a white countertop. I guess I'm worried it would end up looking too clinical. I put together a little "mood board" with some of the things we are looking at and hoping to get any feedback people might have! We are thinking about going with white Axstad cabinets and dark grey Axtad cabinets for the island (I don't love the colour grey they have, but oh well). The photos of cabinets below are the Axstad cabinets, and on the right are examples of the kind of stools/accessories I would try to get. Also for hardware I would want to go with something with warm tones.

Also, I wanted to add some wood accents in, but I'm worried it will clash with our grey wood floors (our dining table and coffee table are also grey wood). But I've gotten on the more brown/natural wood colour trend and I'm hoping I can incorporate it into our kitchen!

Mood board looks fine to me and I’d just caution you to look at actual sample of countertop with white cabinets so you get the whites coordinated correctly. If this means you take a cabinet door to the slab viewing or you bring a sample from the slab to the cabinets in place - that’s the right way to do it. And make sure you see template layout of that patterned quartz prior to fabrication. Also, don’t purchase your backsplash until the counters are in - having a busy counter and busy backsplash is a tricky tightrope to walk.

I would totally add natural wood to your kitchen as shown in your photos. Wood, and plants, will add warmth to your space. Wondering why you plan to make the island in the grey if you don't love the color?? Instead I'd do it the color of the cabinetry around the periphery. Love the backsplash, but I'd let it be the star and pair it with solid counters.

Does the current sink share plumbing with a room behind the wall? If not you could make the kitchen a galley, with a stud bay pantry at the end. If there is space, you could even recess it into the other room. Having the wide, shallow pantry allows you to see everything stored there, at a glance. I drew a plan with separate cooktop and ovens, but you could still use a range. The cooktop is on the exterior wall for easy venting, and there are no uppers on that wall, to keep it open. There is an open shelf, also in the stud bay to the left of the hood, for oils and spices, and the narrow base cabinet at the end could store sheet pans and cutting boards. The window has been enlarged. If you leave a positive reveal on the sink, you can use a cutting board that fits over part of the sink, to extend the prep area. On the opposite wall I left the shelf for a MW, and extended it for cookbooks or other items.

I couldn't find a way to distribute air with transfer beams in the second floor, 8-0 ceilings at the lower level and cathedral ceilings at the upper level. You may need floor trusses with the Mech room in the southeast corner. Get framing and HVAC plans to be sure its all going to work. I designed a house in Cataumet last year with cathedral ceilings and it got so expensive to frame the owners gave up.

Oh, there is an overhang, so you are planning seating. Aisles with seating require more space, as Verbo pointed out. Seating aisle minimums: If there are NO counters/cabinets/appliances behind the seats and the aisle has minimal traffic: 44" If there are counters/cabinets/appliances behind the seats and there is some traffic on the aisle: 54" If there is a table behind the seats: 60" (this does not apply in your case) Two seats cannot share a corner Island & Peninsula seating minimums: 24" linear space per seat Counter-height seating: minimum overhang is 15" of clear leg/knee space Bar-height seating: minimum overhang is 12" of clear leg/knee space. (Note that the top surface should be 18"D if any eating is planned at the counter to accommodate a plate + glass without risking knocking the plate/glass off the counter.) The "clear leg/knee space" depth is after accounting for any cabinets & decorative doors/end panels on the backs of the cabinets.

IMO a little color would go a long way. Why not some colored stools . I agree wait to decide backsplash until everything is installed and BTW that includes waiting to decide wall color if possible. I think the gray island will not be a good idea since chances are it will not work with the gray floor. If after all the white is in you decide down the road to change the color I have had Ikea cabinets painted many times for clients. I love grays so to me it is neutral but 90% of my clients don’t like gray so I use a soft gray / green for walls to still be really neutral but not gray. I do not love the backsplash at all with that counter in fact I might be tempted to use the counter for the backsplash too and what would look awesome is if they could match the pattern so it would loook like you just folded the counter up on the wall. I also would like to see bar pulls in proprtion to the cabinet size and if you want brass that should be okay . When you order the cabinets get the deep drawer wide cabinets you will use for pots and pans to have the shallow drawer at the top and use that for gadgets with drawer organizers much nicer that gadgets sitting on the counter.

Is there way to post your actual layout just for use to have peek and maybe help if we notice something that could be better. I have been designing Ikea kitchens for 20+ yrs.
