Decorating, design, wall color for Family Room, kitchen combo help!

Hello! We are completely renovating a home for us to move into. I am working on the pleasant and exciting/unpleasant and stressful task of design and decorating. I have picked out some things for the family room, while trying to coordinate the kitchen. The furniture I love is Charcoal. It's a nice modern leather set by Rooms2Go. I am going with Agreeable Gray for the wall or Repose Gray 25% lightened, for the entire house (both colors white trim). I like the colors in the kitchens I have attached, all gray cabinets instead of just the island. I need help with best wall color for the kitchen and coordinating with the ideas for the family Room. Colors throughout the home will be Grays...Charcoal, Ivory and black accents through the home and wall art. Please tell me if I am way off with my ideas and coordinating..Any ideas how you would make this work, I am open to hearing...plan to go with laminate flooring everywhere except kitchen, baths and laundry rooms- will do tile there. Thanks a Ton!

I have not read your entire post / but please... do not paint your entire house grey...

The grey fad is over.

If the walls are repose grey, what color will the cabinets be painted?

Will your kitchen has as much light as the kitchen shown above?

An all black and white and grey color scheme can look stark and forbidding.

I suggest adding in natural and textured elements such as brown wood, baskets, brown colored leather, live plants, etc.

MJLB, Thank you for all your wonderful suggestions. I may be able to move the piano to the office but I need to check if it would fit. If so how would you lay out the furniture. I plan to get new rugs in the dining room and living room sides and new sofa,chairs, coffee table and end tables, just not sure what to get. The furniture there is old stuff from our previous family room. What other accent colors do you think might work. There is a living room I am drawn to but not sure how to link it to this but it is in Ballard under the Concorde medallion panels more views. Is that a program that allows you to edit the pictures? jterrilynn, Thank you for your suggestion. What kind of molding would you use? Not sure it would work on the living room side because the front wall goes into the foyer. I do like the drapes above the arch but not sure if I can hang a curtain rod that high with the slopping ceilings. I really dislike the short stationary drapery rods but thought they may work in this room. Gosh this room is so difficult. Moving every few years is a pain especially when your selection of houses not great. I really appreciate everyones feedback and knowledge!

Center the rug with the fireplace. Take the bookcase out of the left corner of the room and put that in the space between the kitchen and FR, where the console table now sits. Move the sectional down toward the fireplace, (after centering the rug), add an end table to the outside of the chaise part of the sectional. Someone sitting there wonÃ¢ÂÂt want to move to get a drink off the coffee table. Be sure there is a lamp there as well, to light that corner of the room. Move the armoire to angle in the corner where the sectional was sitting originally. Use it for storage, perhaps add shelving or even a pull-out shelf for a computer center which can be closed up and put away. The piece is very nice, and gives good height to balance the fireplace and high ceilings. For now, try the console on the wall to the right of the fireplace, and place the new flatscreen on that. Later you may prefer a more substanial cabinet, which can hide other components and store DVDs, etc. If you do that, then try the console table behind the part of the sectional that has its back to the kitchen. Add a comfy upholstered chair in the corner, a bit closer to the fireplace, where the armoire was, along with another small side table and lamp.

colorfast... yes, my next step is to make up a color board. It's been terribly difficult to try and obtain a sample door from my cabinet maker. Though they are scheduled to be finished with the order by next week, I am going to try again and see if I can get something earlier. I did pick my cabinet white by taking color samples with me when I went in to see my granite. Hopefully, my sample tiles will arrive soon and I can get a clearer picture of everything. boxerpups... thank you for your ideas! They are beautiful. I wasn't a big fan of gray walls (one of my friends had suggested it), but then again, I never realized how much undertone can exist and change the effect of a color. I mean, only when I started comparing have I realized that there are blue-ish whites and pinkish whites, etc. I'll have to study those colors you suggested. They are lovely. melaska... I have that same living room saved in my Houzz ideabook and it's the reason I've fallen in love with Shaker Beige! I would love to have my entire 1st floor in that color, minus my kitchen and sunroom. I'm also happy to hear that someone else is considering it with sage green and white. I'd be super interested to see how your space turns out,too! linelle... the BS tiles in the 1st photo is Walker Zanger's Bamboo Mizu line. I had seen a sample in person and confirmed it with the designer. Unfortunately, it's been discontinued. The greens in it are similar to their Celedon color as well as Daltile's Pistachio. I'm hoping to find a tile with lots of variation in its glazing to get the same effect. Heath Ceramics has several colors that are close to both of the photos... since their tiles are all handmade, there can be a lot of variation in the glazing as well. I'm waiting for some samples from them to check it out... no showrooms in this area. Hope this helps!

Really nice room. Looks comfortable and inviting. Good choice w/new sofas. Like the fireplace as is ... but less clutter could improve the look of it. Not sure what the picture is above the piano. If it is a family photograph, reframe it and the family photo on the mantel with the same frames and put both above the piano. Really like your coffee table. One day it will be a valuable antique if you don't booger it up. So, for the coffee table, consider taking the table to a glass company and having a dark gray tinted thick glass top created for it -- no refinish for the table necessary. (Alternately, cover everything but the top and paint the top only -- perhaps black or else the same white as your cabinets.) Do the same for your current end table as you do for the coffee table. If you're going to add a second end table, since matching the existing one would likely prove difficult, consider a totally different look -- perhaps a wood 2-drawer filing cabinet? http://realsolidoak.com/office.html

@freedomplace1...I find your comment to be very rude and unneccessary. I didn't ask for what was in or out of style. So, maybe you should read next time. I could care less about a fad. I paint MY house the color I want. Thank you @loobabLoobab for your response and ideas! If the walls are painted repose... thinking of going with espresso cabinets or white. The kitchen will not have that much light...it has a 41 inch window, above the sink. I'm not really into color, I just like neutrals, I have definitely considered natural elements.

If you really love grey that much - go for it. But please do not show back up here with “grey problems” - as many folks have who did their spaces in a predominance of grey. Grey from top to bottom, and now they‘re depressed and don’t know what to do. And btw, this is why the whites and warmer colors + blue, etc., are so popular now. People figured it out.

Repose walls and white cabinets will look great. So will the espresso. That is very dark brown, like coffee, right?

I love picture frames that are simple flat panel espresso colored/stained wood where you can see the wood grain but they look like wonderful dark coffee and they are a good two inches wide on a big poster. (Yikes, I always see things in terms of food, granite counters look like vanilla fudge, or jamoca almond fudge ice cream, or nougat candy. I really couldn't do that, I'd be running to the store all the time!)

There is a frequent commenter here, Anglophilia who used I think repose grey on her walls and white on her cabinets, or was it white on her walls and repose grey on her cabinets? I can't remember! Why not invite her on this thread and ask her. She used Corian white countertops and Carrara marble backsplash and her kitchen looks just wonderful.

I don't see the whole kitchen, but what would be nice would be one upper cabinet with a glass front to break up the expanse of cabinetry. And you can put some of your pretty serving pieces in there. Even if they are all white (mine are) or whatever color, their shapes will be nice to look at.

It might be something to keep in mind for your kitchen.

This kitchen has a grey island. The countertops are white cesarstone.

I just wrote them to ask what the backsplash is. I think it is so much more interesting than flat matte subway tile.

Renovation has become a different game in recent years. And to think that we are a good friend of ours who will help us in this matter what we have to offer for our service and we would be good to hear that we are in the process to work with the zoom session
