I got into design via Landscape Architecture, which I studied at the University of Virginia.

From tiny studio spaces to large rooms, crisp Scandinavian style to cushy and colorful maximalism, the most recent popular family rooms on Houzz vary widely in size and style. Several trends popped up, including home bars, media walls, clever extra seating and added architectural features on the ceiling. Here are the 10 most popular family room photos uploaded to Houzz from January to March of this year, as measured by the number of people who have saved them to their Houzz ideabooks.
1. Scandinavian-Inspired Style
Seeing which photos Houzzers have been saving the most was a real eye-opener for me. I didn’t know there were quite so many fans of Scandinavian style, especially when it comes to the family room. Washed in white with rustic wood accents, clean lines and simple geometric patterns, this Northern European style influenced almost half of the most popular family room photos so far this year.

A sheepskin throw, thick and soft rug, and cozy fireplace bring the Danish hygge everyone’s been buzzing about lately.
In this family room, white wall paint keeps the slanted ceilings from feeling oppressive. Instead, it’s a light and bright aerie. Another trend that is still running strong is the use of versatile poufs, which can be used as footrests and extra seating.
2. Compact and Studio Space Solutions
This family room not only has Scandinavian style, it actually is located in Denmark. But it also revealed another aspect Houzzers have been looking for — how to lay out a modest-size family room. This cozy studio apartment feels light and airy, thanks to all of that white paint. Wood accents provide continuity, while a dark sofa anchors the family room space.

In the realm of Houzz, this space is relatively compact for a family room, and it’s proof you don’t have to hold back on color and pattern in a smaller space. Lush green velvet, weathered leather and metal, a lively fireplace tile, a botanical rug and colorful striped Roman shades make it a spot that’s just begging us to curl up with a good book or gather with family.
3. Serious Ceiling Treatments
On the flip side of the compact trend, many family rooms are the largest rooms in the house, and often have soaring ceilings. Whether in a tray or vaulted, large, high ceilings can take the cozy right out of the room. Treatments like beams, trusses and fretwork help bring them down to human scale while adding architectural interest.

Tongue-and-groove paneling and dark beams add cozy character to this large family room. The oversize chandelier mitigates the height and catches the eye.
4. A Home Bar
Home bars in different spots around the house are trending, and this one is a good example of finding the right space for one in the family room. Tucked next to a striking hot-rolled-steel accent wall, this bar has just enough room for a sink, cabinets a little counter space and floating shelves with lighting. Also worth noting is the tile up the bar area wall, which complements the steel as well as the concrete pillar outside.

5. Media Storage Solutions
This design embraces the massive TV, which blends in nicely with the custom media wall. Houzzers are often looking for the best ways to store all of those pesky components and wires in an attractive way.
And the playful vibe in here is family-friendly and fun. It’s as if the sofa was chosen to complement all of the toys on display in the shelves. It looks like a cheerful place, with plenty of room for the whole family to sink in and watch a movie together.

6. Extra-Seating Solutions
In this family room, a clever coffee table has room to stash four substantial ottomans underneath. They can be pulled out when the family want to put their feet up in front of the TV or need extra seating for guests.

@June, which sofa? I'll see if I can track it down.
Hi Becky, It's No. 1. Scandinavian-Inspired Style from "6 Popular Family Room Designs Moves" - Sofa is very light blue and has "Atelier Daaa" up in the right hand corner of the photo, from your blog 4/9/2017 :) Thank you!
June, Oh that is a good one! Shoot, it's from France. I'll see if I can dig one that's similar here in the States as soon as I get a chance.
