Any ideas as to why there is this rectangle cut out of my closet wall?

We might need a bit more information to help solve the mystery. How long have you had the closet? When did you notice the hole? What’s on the other side of the hole? What is the white stuff at the top of the hole? What is on the level below the closet? I’m thinking it could, possibly, be for a laundry chute?

I noticed the hole in my closet when I first bought the house, almost 3 years ago. It is up on the second floor. I looked inside of the hole with a flashlight. There is nothing there. My bedroom has walls made out of wood panel, so the brown you see in the photo is the inside of the wood panel from my bedroom wall. The white stuff in the hole is some type of plaster and is sitting on the wood inside the wall. The level below the closet is the hallway.

Alex, I also was pleasantly surprised at the unanimity on this! Oakley, WRT comfort, we have sisal and seagrass rugs down already and since we're Floridians who are pretty used to bare footin', I doubt jute would be too uncomfortable. (PS hope you enjoy Wolf Hall as much as I did, and if you do be sure to go directly to Bring up the Bodies once you finish; it's the second of what will be a trilogy). As for the seagrass option, the reason I'm leaning toward jute is that I am trying to create that decorating idea of a neutral room w/texture to give it some interest. And jute definitely seems to have more pizazz in that department. OTOH the idea that jute sheds, collects dirt, and perhaps unravels easily gives me pause. We have 2 cats who have used the sisal and seagrass to scratch and those rugs are bulletproof. I certainly don't want to put something down that literally will be the first thing you see when coming into my living room,and then have it look shabby. At least I know that the size of the rug is will be no less than 9x12. I'll give the material decision awhile to percolate since the furniture won't be in for awhile and they aren't on sale anyway. We have had two closet systems installed Closets by Design. Both times we had positive experiences with the install; just be clear whether you want it to be notched in the back for baseboard, in my opinion it looks better to remove your baseboard so it’s not notched. It’s also worth it to add the baseboard and crown, and increase the height of the system to the ceiling. The salespeople do have a “poor mentality” to make sure they get the sale so you really have to push to add these extras. We are pretty handy, so the third closet system we did ourselves using Menard’s Dakota system for a third of the cost or less. It looks as nice and sturdy the rest.

It's not bad... I might think about your vision / needs, like: - do you have a TV in your bedroom? If so, is there a convenient spot to mount it? - if the bedroom door is open - there could be privacy issues with the view ~straight into the master bath - depending on where you live and how the toilet gets installed, you may need to plan for extra insulation in the wall behind the toilet - re: having bedroom in the front - it looks like you have a pretty deep front yard + you're in a residential area... the benefit of reorganizing the space so the bedroom faces the front is you can have >1 window in the bedroom - one on each wall of the corner What is in the room that shares the wall with the headboard? If it's shared with another bedroom, then there could be an issue of noise transfer if your bed is up against that wall

1. I think "shelved closet" should be your linen closet, since your master has plenty of room for a dresser. Then "linen closet" can become a coat closet. 2. I think the dining room table should run the other direction. Then I'd actually *extend* the wall to the left of the range to allow for another landing spot. Then you extend the counter on the sink side to match, to have more cabinetry and more counter space. 3. Much as you want to "open up" your kitchen, you already have almost no kitchen and almost no storage, so I don't think you can afford to throw away uppers. You could open up between the uppers and the counter, to make more conversational and visual linkage, and/or use "shorter" uppers to widen that space a bit. 4. Then the stove and sink sides need to switch, which will allow venting of range top and safer connection to LR. You can keep the support corner closed in for a drying area that's hidden from guests. This should be super budget-friendly while allowing you to achieve most of your goals. Remember that you need it to continue to be liveable for 4 people!

Hi we live in a 245-year-old home and when we bought our house we had the exact same closet dilemma in a 2nd floor bedroom closet. We found out that the previous owner was searching for another fireplace because the closet was on the other side of the central stack of the fireplace below. We decided to just close the hole since we have enough fireplaces. The mystery lives on.....

Depends on the age of the house somewhat...my '50s house has a of things inserted into closet walls like shoeracks. I think it's the one halfway down this article: https://retrorenovation.com/2011/07/17/7-odd-and-inventive-home-features-from-1954-including-a-fascinating-island-type-drainboard-sink/

In a '20s house I had a really nicely finished and trimmed door in a closet about that size that went to the plumbing shutoffs in the neighboring bath, but I guess that's not the case here!

ForI, thanks for that link! Very forward-thinking! The dust chute? Forerunner to our central-vac system with dust door! Package receiver for Amazon and Chewy! (I had a milk door, but I sealed the door on the inside and used the outside door for my little garden tools, just right for my rowhouse pocket garden.)

I think easy access like yours to the plumbing would be great.

My mom had one in her 1980’s house. Previous owner had a security system at one time and the control panel (or whatever it’s called) was in the closet.

I don't know, but I wouldn't worry about it. I'd simply cut out that insanely poor repair above the opening, do a standard drywall patch, paint it, and forget it.

It looks like some kind of beaverboard-do you have an old house? Maybe they cut out a piece to patch somewhere else in the house.
