I agree it's too high. should be closer to where the height of your silverware art is hung. top of it just below height of cabinet. I think it should be moved to the left as well.

One small idea. You might find a bench for in front of windows that would be open under for that heat vent but could be spot to read or pull bench up to long side of table and put two chairs on ends when seating more folks. I found this one for fun factor. You need to measure that inside (flat part) and keep width more bigger than that.

Omg Flo! I adore animal prints.. and love the idea of a bench. I have to bring up extra chairs from the basement to entertain more than 4 and it’s a pain! I’m definitely going to start digging into shopping for a bench! I’m very coachable and love getting such wonderful advice! Be careful what you ask for... I would love ideas for my great room. I can’t afford new furniture.. plus I love what I have.. but the walls could use some work and more than anything... the mantel!! I was toying with the poppy print from the beginning of this thread. Very pretty room. I think a bit more layers on mantel with more contrast could help. Are you in love with big clock? Large art on that wall would bring color and balance height of the windows. Let’s play around a bit with mantel for starters. Could you post photo standing directly facing fireplace/mantel and clear everything off. Then I can do mock up. 😁

you have a very warm and cozy living area and love the view. to me the set up of the room needs to accentuate the gorgeous view and it does look like you are taking advantage of the view with the setup. are you wanting to change the feel of the room or are you thinking just small changes? I could see it becoming more light and airy and very organic, taking cues from nature.... right now a lot of beige but I could see it become more nature inspired with greens and blues

Thanks Theresa! Probably small changes. Accessories, mantel and artwork. I’m not so good at that part.. I’m trying to move from all the beige. You can see a small paint sample on the back wall to the right. My downstairs is all Kilim beige except my kitchen. Just painted that anew gray. Family room is next up. That sample is agreeable gray. I can’t do the whole downstairs at once.. so one at a time. And clearly I have to hire someone for the great room. I’d love to tackle it but the height would probably scare the daylights out of me! I love the idea of bringing more outdoor, nature type things into the room!

LOL, my hands are sweaty just thinking about trying to paint that high.... that would be a no way jose for me too.

new paint color will be a huge change and make a big impact...flo is awesome with paint color, I'm more the type of.... bring home a bunch of options and see what works. I could see a grey green paint color for your family room... this one is sea salt from Sherwin williams

I like the contrasting colors in the chairs and table and definitely would keep them as they are. I also like the color of the wood floor and would avoid adding a rug as long as your dog is in the home. However, I would change out the inlaid wood wall art in favor of a landscape picture or tapestry that would bring softness and color to the room. I also would suggest you place the large candle in the center of the table and find a new location for the lovely wrought iron stand. In place of the stand in the corner, I would add a large pot filled with a leafy, green plant to bring more life and color into the room.

Here is first option for mantel. I see the moldings and so I wanted to do an offset arrangement with one item in far right space and leaning round mirror to the left with overlapping items of different heights.

The small sea bird for fun. The candle sconce for ambience and balance for overall look. The books to anchor arrangement and bring contrast and help keep mirror in place.

You can “shop in your house” for similar items.

as another idea, place a row or groupings of vases with greenery or flowers in front of a mirror. could do faux flowers or stems and change up the greenery different times of the year.

What’s the secret to finding greenery that looks real? I love the look of real but can’t add the maintenance. Work, single, 2 kids left in college living here, 3 dogs and my sons cat! ;) Can’t keep one more living thing alive! Haha!

I've had luck at michaels for faux greenery... succulents, stems. i tend not to get faux flowers, but thats just me. big flowers like hydrangea can look real...

I am very picky about faux plant material. I have a couple wholesale places here that are my first stops. They carry botanically correct pieces. You can check your area for this type source. Many sell retail too. Occasionally, I use Hobby Lobby. Some are pretty good. Just have to be careful of what you pick. For low maintenance, do vases that are pottery. Glass shows dust too much. What is height and width of panel above mantel?

totally agree that pottery is a better option than glass, i like too that with pottery you hide the stems. faux boxwood can look nice too. I have faux fern stems from michaels that I like. i mixed a few different styles together

Given the styling in your room, you seem to lean to traditional looks. So the mantel is where you can express your personality and still fit into the pieces you have.

Thank you! So the mantel is 75 inches wide, 8 inches deep. There’s 3 ft of height above it to where the trim meets the windows. If that makes sense?
