Do you have a black hole in your kitchen?

Saw this and thought y'all might enjoy it... for us, we have a white hole singularity and a black hole!

Yeah, I have an assortment of "holes", but this is the biggest one:

Yes, that's our shelter dog, Molly. She's 12 now and a veteran scrounger and floor cleaner.

The cats don't even try to be stealthy, they just howl until you give them something, and then they walk away. One is very picky, but loves liver. The other is a junk food eater, he likes popcorn and chips and goldfish cheese crackers. Neither would eat anything that's dropped during food prep, though. Good thing, if they tried, Molly might eat THEM by accident, LOL.

nope....my wanna be is sort of taupe/brown....and eats nothing from the floor bit chocolate and blue cheese. You can spill cheerios, drop a cracker even a piece of cheddar cheese and she will inspect it....and walk away.

We have moisture issues so couldn't do wood (plus, we live on a ranch and hubby works around heavy machinery ALOT...our floors take a real beating!)...so, we went with travertine in most of the downstairs (we put *super* cushy carpet in the side tv room). I LOVE MY TRAVERTINE! It never looks dirty. We laid it in a three size versailles pattern which gives an "old world" style feel to the house. It's indestructible and everything cleans up perfectly...even spilled paint. We carried the travertine up the stairs...only on the riser part of the stairs..used the ultra cushy carpet on the step part. Kitchen was done in a dark porcelain tile with texture...also love it..never looks dirty, isn't slippery, cleans up so easily! Yes, the floors are hard. I just wear good shoes/slippers and no worries.

Here is a pic of our desk in progress: The top cabs will have seeded glass and house my grandmother's wedding china and some other treasures. The center bottom (of the top cabs) will be for a tv, phone, and modem stuff (hopefully most wires, etc hidden behind the tv). The lower cabs are being replaced by counterheight cabs. That's what we had in the kitchen before, and liked it that way. It was the only thing our cabinet guy and I failed to communicate about -- he saw desk on the plans and ordered desk height. I assumed he'd notice that they were cab height when he measured the old kitchen. Anyway, he was very nice when I called and said I wasn't happy and is replacing them with the counter height at their expense. I'll keep large hostess stuff in those cabs, and desk stuff in the drawers. We're using the same countertop on the desk as everywhere else(Cambria Branbury). I will make a fabric covered corkboard for the backsplash. There will be plugmold under the upper cabs. We liked having the desk in the kitchen before, so it was not changed much for the new kitchen -- just the glass doors and tv shelf in the uppers. It was home headquarters, and the place we left messages for each other, my purse -- it did collect some clutter, but I cleared it away regularly. Karina is right about the honed finish taking care of much of the maintenance. (Thank you BTW!) Honed also has a silky feel, and is much more tactile IMO. Whatever you decide, I think you'll love it. If you have it honed, an enhancing sealer brings out the copper flecks, without having a high polished mirror-like finish. There are many different sizes to the flecks and I noticed that I prefer bigger flecks so the Galaxy comes through. I had to look at several slabs before I found what I was looking for. I kept going back to Black Galaxy which helped make my decision for me. Pick up a sample of the polished and honed and see which you like best.

I hardly had any wall space left but I managed to buy a 1946 calender and find a space big enough to hang it. It has notations on it about setting eggs; hen, goose and duck. I added the pepper plaster plaques because I found them locally in my price range. Not my first choice but shipping from eBay gets out of hand. After MUCH discussion I decided against any type of backsplash and left it painted white so I use "old" prints and things as my backsplash. Two of the framed pictures on the SW counter were found in my machine shed. One is dated 1933 and I presume the other is likely in that same time frame. The calendar on the NW counter is from a grocery store no longer operating in my home town. Everything is either framed or laminated on its way to a frame. I like to change things every so often so this works for me. I have lots of pictures I've aquired over time. I could change everything every week and be good to go for a year. height=200> height=200> height=200> The advice >height=400> didn't work for me.

I've always loved that shot!!!

I have a tabby that sits in the middle of the kitchen when he's hungry. Just shows up and parks his butt, waiting for me to notice him, as I'm noodling in the kitchen.

We used to have a cat that would come in a flash whenever we opened the drawer for the can opener. Really funny since you could open the drawer for something else and no cat. How do they know???

We have a black hole and a mostly white hole in our tiny galley kitchen. They weigh between 50-55 lbs. The white one can hear a bag of chips open from the second floor at the other end of the house.

My sister in law used to babysit for some neighbours when she was a teenager and one time, she was there around suppertime and went to get the broom to sweep the floor...the neighbours stopped her and said " you don't have to do that, we just let the dogs in".

I have had one of those going back to 2001. In March I got a new model. Boy, can black holes move fast!

I have a black cat and a grey cat - they will beg for anything I am eating but mostly just slink away when it is not something they should eat. Had another black cat the begged for crackers and chips, she's gone now and the remaining hole grabbers won't touch those things, although they beg anyway if I am eating. Didn't know cats begged like dogs. When I had two 50# Samoyed dogs - they were my "white holes in the kitchen". Ate every tiny bit of stuff that fell - especially raw pasta. Go figure. Never had to resort to a broom with them around. I miss them, as the cats wouldn't scarf a crumb, ever. Love your photo Sooz!!

No, mine is smaller and sort of tabbyish. It is also selective towards meats and shuns vegetables.
