What could be happeninng?

This afternoon, I made a batch of blueberry scones. As I was eating part of one, I suddenly tasted an extreme amount of what seemed like salt. It literally left my mouth dry as a desert. The recipe called for sifting the dry ingredients, which I did not do. Do you think the baking powder may have settled in that part of the scone and caused that horrible taste? It's happened with the last coffee cake I made also.
