Comments (13)Ha. Too easy for all of you smarties! So, as I am sitting here instead of cleaning as I really should be doing, I am watching American Masters. The subject is JD Salinger. Fascinating. The fourth anniversary of his death is tomorrow. That would have been an amazing trivia question---whose writing prompted three murders? Who was the author who carried the first six chapters of his signature work with him on D-Day? Whose most famous book was rejected by The New Yorker which felt one family with four such extraordinary and talented children was implausible? Who is due to have his final works released in installment beginning next year? Will they be master works? I am betting they will be. He has completed the history of the Glass and Caulfield families apparently. There were so many interesting tidbits. I think it is time to re-read Catcher in the Rye before the new works come out. Comments (38)I made my first loaf last night, and I really like the way it came out. I agree with Cheryl that the menu is a bit confusing, and I think I made the bread on the wrong setting, for size, at least. I forgot about the size setting when I was starting the machine, and I was making a medium (the smallest) loaf, which used a total of 3 cups of flour. I used the plain white bread recipe, substituted one cup of whole wheat flour plus two tablespoons of Vital Wheat Gluten, since I was using all purpose instead of bread flour, and so because of the whole wheat. The water was supposed to be 1-1/4 cups, but I used 1-1/3 cups because I thought the WW might need extra water, but otherwise I followed the recipe exactly. Well, I'm not sure I used the correct yeast - I have SAF yeast in the freezer, and so I just used that. It did not have a yeast flavor when it came out. It only slightly stuck, and so I used a plastic spatula to get it loose. I let it sit in the machine for about 10-12 minutes after the timer went off - not sure if I was supposed to do that, but the bread had a thick, somehwat hard, crust, which I like and prefer. I'm very happy with the loaf I made, although it does taste rather generic, but still much better than most WW bread I can buy. It's not as good as La Brea Bakery bread, but that is rather expensive, and this bread is an adequate substitute (except for the sourdough). That's the "good" thing about having snow this late in the season. It melts faster since the weather's a little warmer. (Well, that's the Weather Channel's explanation, anyway.) Comments (18)The fabric probably is not practical, and yes, all but one of them are a wool or wool blend. In the first two photos, the cloth on the left is a rayon/cotton blend and is a plain weave, but very heavy - heavier than canvas or duck, but also more drapable. In the third photo, the two dark cloths on the right are a Moquette fabric that is a wool and rayon blend, and the table in the middle corner has a cloth that is has wool and rayon yarns; heavy wool in one direction and tight rayon in the other direction. This cloth is also the heaviest one! It is also a plain weave, but the weave is loose enough that it drapes nicely and also was easy to hem at the rounded corners. The Moquette fabric did not behave so nicely when I was sewing the hems, as the fabric did not want to stay in place. It does drape nicely, however, but the hems ended up being a bit smaller than I planned for, and so those two cloths are a bit large. However, they puddled up the excess inside the booth, and I think that works okay. BTW, Nash sent a message saying that the sales yesterday were the highest he had had since he stopped selling pastries! He said everyone apparently loves the cloths - but he did not include his booth supervisor! I guess she'll have to get over it.
