How Would You Fix The Front Of This House?
Comments (30)I hear what some of you are saying (really), but this home really is a pretty good deal in the area. In this school zone, my options for a house this size are either a turn-key for about $600K (example 1) (example 2) (example 3) (example 4) OR I can get something that needs some work in the $400K range (example 1) (example 2) (example 3). With these options, this house became very attractive to me. It's one of the biggest options and it's in a very nice lakeside neighborhood with lots of updated homes (I don't want the nicest home on the block once I'm done.. that's the situation I am currently in). None of these $600K listings have $130K kitchens or $70K master baths... even the nicest homes in this area don't have that. My current home (less than a mile away) has a nicer kitchen than most of these homes and I paid $35K for it by buying cabinets and counters from the warehouses themselves and subcontracting the work myself... I also cashed in at HHGregg's going out of business sale on Kitchenaid's commercial style appliances. My master bath redo was about $7500. In this town, almost everything under $1M just has new cabinet doors slapped on with a fresh paint job and Whirlpool appliances, so a $130K kitchen is definitely way off base. I can put $125K into the inside of this house and it will be nicer than any of the similar sized (and most importantly, same school district) $600K homes... the inside is not my main concern as I have been there and done that (within the last year). My main concern was that the $600K homes I'm looking at (linked above) have more curb appeal.. which is how I got around to making this post....See Morehow to balance an asymmetrical house exterior?
Comments (9)absolutely do a porch and portico. it will completely change the look. you could actually make that house look adorable. but an easy solution is to get a double door installed to eat up the right space. (hopefully the interior will allow this. Here's how it would look with a portico (which is also something it needs) Here's how the other house looks. what a diff a portico, paint, some columns and hardscape does for a house, yes? and I love these double arched doors. your house is so square and rectangle, that a little soft edges w/the doors and the rounded portico, really take off some of the hard edges. If you buy that house, I'd spend the money and make the exterior look exactly like this one^ this house also look like yours. this one is nice too w/the copper roof portico. but image if the porch went out under both windows. And since I'm spending your money, when you redo your roof, have a few dormers added: this is beautiful. I'm telling you, that house could be adorable if you did some modifications. almost like the first one. I did a little photoshop on yours using the above pic as the modifications: again, imagine if you carried the brick porch over to the shorter side, or to both sides. similar to yours. notice the dormers, the portico w/pediment, brick porch/steps and the door w/sidelites. you could always keep your single door but do a right side-lite to help eat up that space....See MoreAsymmetrical front porch
Comments (37)Although I am a fan of symmetry, that absence of symmetry with the posts seems deliberate and doesn't look bad. Before doing what A Foster suggests (removing the middle post), make sure that middle post isn't a weight bearing one. If you remove the post, then the arc above the posts could be covered and a straight edge across the bottom created and, if you end up with one base wider than the other, consider adding a statue or large flower pot there. Something you might try before removing or adding a post is add a bracket centered above the two left posts to hang a flag or banner flower pot or wind chime or bird house or a bird feeder or some art you like. Personally like the larger wind chimes. Also like colorful spinners: https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/560453535/16-wood-wind-spinner-garden-spinner-wood If you change the look, do post after pics....See MoreHow to fix this ugly house
Comments (10)I like the looks of the house. I do think you could improve a bit, by adding an equal sized window on the top, to make it look more evened out. I do like the arch. It goes with the style of the house. I dont like the color, even a tiny bit. Is the front door under that arch somewhere. If so, that arch is perfect for leading you right to the entry way. Ugly house?? No, it isnt....See MoreJennifer Hoyer
