Must the front be asymmetrical?
Comments (14)Consider a lawnless front yard area too. We have a small front yard on a circle. Spring phase is bulbs. Summer through frost it changes to Liatris, Japanese Windflowers, Hydrangeas and Timber Bamboo. All summer elements are tall to reduce need to weed. The bulbs are ground cover. This was all lawn when we moved in last Spring. Spring Phase Photo Early design phase photo placing bamboo root barrier pits and hydrangea. The design starts in low key in colors and shifts to deeper color element balance, many in firey tones. The brown red color on right is the reddish lacecap Hydrangea 'Selina'. Early landscape design work Summer 2016. Later stage with Hydrangea installed getting ready to install central mini meadow with bulb and perennial phases for Spring and Summer/Fall phases. The house builder graded off our top soil when forming our lot. So we have a tough glacial till soil with a lot of clay, gravel and rocks to screen. The matrix must be broken with a heavy iron digging rod. But we're lucky that that as screened it has just enough sand and loam to fall apart and make a great soil, if you add compost, 20% (for perennials) to 50% (for hydrangea). Total yard project uses 80 hydrangea cultivars, gazebo, fish pond and more. A little works pays off Over the pond look. A Gazebo by Pond backyard works fir us. It could also be a front yard. Canna if want semitropical look. Delphinum if want lower key. Or knock some socks off and use bright white Moongarden elements only. People almost never see a true Moongarden. It works with your white house ... especially if you use a Clematis Henryi or Honeysuckle 'Scentsation' on that beautiful porch rail. Add a trellis above and use both?...See MoreHow to fix this asymmetric house front?
Comments (9)It’s not meant to be symmetrical but I know how you feel as I have a non- symmetrical. It messes with my head. Saying that though you have much more of “cool” to work with. I would change the paint color, change the garage doors and add a plain round window. I stuck some detail in but that’s just an option. Notice how the circle gives your eye a place to land? Much more restful! Notice how with the zipper of garage window gone that you feel less anxious? Ok, maybe it’s just me : ) EDITED: please forgive my circle, I did it manually. The circle surround frame is smooth not bubbly. Maybe something like these garage doors but perhaps a different color. It just depends on what color you’re painting the house....See MoreAsymmetrical porch railing help needed
Comments (4)Wider beds with more loose and open/airy landscaping will help fool the eye about all that. Hanging a wreath on the brick to the right side of the door can help camouflage the difference. On the right rail, add a metal security bar attached to the actual hand rail. That will be practical and will "fill" some of the imbalance of the larger space. I'll try to find the pic I saved of that....See MoreCan I have an offset front door on an asymmetrical house?
Comments (17)A true Cape doesn't have dormers, a porch, paired windows or sidelites so there's no reason to be concerned with being true to the style. If you need to call it something, say it's of the Tidewater South or Southern Raised Cottage tradition. Its difficult to judge the entry space with such a small piece of the plan. The builder-developer detailing of the trim needs a lot of work. PPF is correct about the dormer windows. I find it diffucult to look at an elevation drawing where every roof shingle is shown; only a machine sees every shingle. I would trace this elevation by hand and add some color before showing it to a client. Tidewater South Cape...See MoreUser
