How to match prefinished hardwood floors

Andrea L

We are renovating a large chunk of a house we just bought. Much of this area already had hardwood and we are planning to install hardwood in the areas that had other flooring. We changed the lay out so the transition for existing to new hardwood will be at odd places. We believe the existing hard wood is prefinished natural red oak and therefore has a mirco-bevel. Some of it is in pretty bad shape and would need to be refinished regardless. What should we do about the type of wood we use to tooth in and do the rest of the flooring?

Here are the options as I see it

1) Use flat unfinished wood for what we add in, sand and refinish it all but risk the difference between the two being really obvious

2) Use micro beveled unfinished where we need to add wood (does that exist?)

3) Rip out all the existing hard wood and put in all new floor (either prefinished or unfinished, probably flat unfinished). We already ended up ripping out a lot of the existing hardwood for various reasons. It is only about 200-250 square feet that would come out (out of ~800-850 sqft total area)

Astatically we like the look of the flat unfinished. We also like the ease of cleaning and repair.

Would love input on these options from a look and price perspective. Any other ideas or suggestions for us?
