Low Ceiling Height -- your thoughts?
Comments (4)How tall are you? My husband is 6'5" so a 7'4" ceiling would be horrible for him. My personal preference would be to keep the ceilings as high as possible, but I'm used to pre-war buildings where the ceilings are at least 9'6". I have friends in a mid-century house nearby, and my husband stoops the whole time we're there, but it's fine for them. You said you've already framed out the ceiling. My suggestion would be to hang paper where the ceiling will be so you can experience the space closed in at that height. And then you'll know for sure. (that's what we've been doing during our renovations so dimensions don't seem so abstract) Maybe the windows and natural light will offset the lower ceiling?...See MoreYour thoughts on ceiling fans?
Comments (46)I'm not a fan of them, but I grew up in the northeast where ceiling fans weren't popular. We vacation every year in Florida in a house with lots of ceiling fans, but I find them visually distracting when they're on. My husband likes them so I tolerate them when he turns them on. I guess it's a regional thing and I'm sure I'd get used to them if I was around them more often than 1 week a year. If you like the location of some of your fans but they're not your style, you could try spray painting one of them in a finish that blends in a little better than the white does against your wood (maybe an antique bronze or oil rubbed bronze look) and see if that helps. You might also find glass shades on ebay that are more your style but would work with the size fitter of the existing shades, though not sure if it's worth the hassle if you really don't like that style in general. For a cool breeze on hot summer days, table fans are my favorite. They produce a strong breeze and remind me of being a kid. We didn't have air conditioning so we'd fight over who got to sit in front of the fan on hot summer days. Last week I found a cool little antique table fan at a flea market that's perfect for toting around wherever we need it....See MoreExtend wires from wall switch to power ceiling light in closet?
Comments (5)First, you need to confirm that the switch HAS a hot and neutral. One way to wire a switch is to use a "switch loop" which doesn't involve having a neutral. Google that term if you want to understand what I mean. Second, you can't just staple the cable to the wall. NM cable (which is what you actually mean when you say romex) needs physical protection. Either it needs to be behind the drywall or you need to run it in conduit....See MoreMaster closet/bathroom plan thoughts
Comments (21)That was actually in round 1 of design but it felt too chopped up. Plus my husband wants to be able to sprint from the shower to the closet without being in front of a full-length window. But I love the frosted glass idea. I was actually looking at reeded glass this morning. It feels more current to me than frosted. And yes on moving the linen closet. I think that toilet room is larger than it needs to be. Thanks for your thoughts. Has anyone ever built or remodeled and not wanted to change a thing about their choices? It feels so permanent....See MoreWayata
