Help with Anti-virus?
Comments (1)Yea, it is a subscription service. You can use the one subscription on three computers. I use it here on xp and it seldom requires any attention. It just does its own things silently in the background. Every now and then you will see a bubble saying its up to date. Updates itself automatically and frequently....See MoreComcast anti Virus Vs MSE
Comments (13)Any anti virus test comparison would likely be obsolete within a week because virus activity is a moving target. From Snidely's link: Microsoft canâÂÂt be too happy with its security software right now: For the second time in a row, the companyâÂÂs Security Essentials failed to earn certification from AV-Test, the independent German testing lab best known for evaluating the effectiveness of antivirus software. Then the very next paragraph: These results are noteworthy because Microsoft Security Essentials is currently (as of December) the most popular security suite in North America and the world. If MSE was as doubtful as the article suggests surely a large portion of those subscribers would move to something deemed safer. The second from last paragraph suggests biased reporting as it notes MSE was only one of three that failed yet they did not bother naming the other two companies. Plus if you click the second link in that paragraph you will note the tests appear to be from November/December 2012. That is months ago and a huge swath of viruses (or virii) have been released since then...See MoreAnti-virus protection for the aging
Comments (2)Yacheryl, I was having a hard time also to find virus protection for a couple of my older computers. I now have "Avast" on my ME laptop (128 ram) and it works great. I put "Avira AntiVir" on the 98 computer and it works fine....See MoreAnti Virus and Anti Spyware equals slow computer
Comments (10)Dennis, thanks for a well laid out list of problems. It does help those who feel they can see some or all of your problems. AVG is by far the most popular free anti virus and I doubt that is your issue. I would not remove that one. Spyware Doctor I know nothing about. If you have the original CD or the download stored on your computer you could remove it entirely using the Add/Remove and see if that helps at all. Superantispyware and or Malwarebytes could be alternatives to trying Spybot Search & Destroy. If you use Spybot S&D be sure it is in fact that program and not a sound alike rogue program. Have you ran any cleaners at all? Not registry cleaners but the Disk cleanup in the Accessories/System Tools folder of XP. Try that and a defrag, it will help modestly. Do you have Google or Yahoo toolbars and are they allowed to run in the background? The Google Toolbar has either 3 or 4 entries in your Startup and using your resources. Click Start click Run type msconfig click OK click the Startup tab Now check each of these items and decide if they do in fact need to run. Google each entry before deciding to stop one because if you stop the wrong ones the computer may not start again. If you stop any you need to reboot. During the reboot you will get a dire warning, do not be alarmed, place a check mark not to see it again and continue the booting....See Moremillworkman
