Anti Virus and Anti Spyware equals slow computer

I have an HP Pavillion dv6000 laptop. When i go to My computer and properties, I see the following:

Windows XP version 2002 SP3

Intel CPU T1350 @ 1.86 GHz

782 MHz, 504MB of RAM

When i click "About Windows" in the Help menu, here is what i see:

Ver 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.080814-1236 : Service Pack 3)

CURRENT CONFIGURATION:

1) AVG Anti-Virus Free (Version 8.0.176)

2) PC Tools Spyware Doctor (Version 6.0.0.386)

3) I have no firewall in place that I'm aware of

4) Laptop runs using a wireless modem and our internet service is broadband via cable

LAPTOP PURPOSE:

1) Primarily home usage - Internet browsing and home banking online, working with general documents, no gaming. Wife and kids use the laptop for the above.

2) In evenings I use laptop some for remote login to work PC

PROBLEM: Computer is acting bogged down and is slow to accept and act on commands. Even a simple click on "My computer" takes several seconds to open the window, and the animated flashlight appears until the window finally pops up. We reboot the computer at least once a day. Yesterday, I rebooted it in the evening 3 times, and it would not bring up the start menu items in the bottom toolbar such as AVG, Spyware doctor, printer icon, and sound properties. I turned the laptop off, then was able to turn it on this morning and it is "working."

My wife has a login profile, and i have a separate login profile. No passwords, but we have 2 separate user profiles setup in Windows XP. Both profiles have the same issues.

CURRENT STATUS: I've done nothing yet to fix the problem, just research. My thoughts after reading several threads on this forum and other sources is to take a couple of different approaches and I'm not sure which is best:

1) Keep the paid for version of Spyware Doctor and get rid of AVG Anti-Virus free. Try something else for Anti-virus maybe.

2) Get rid of both of my programs - AVG Anti-Virus and Spyware Doctor. Try something like Spybot Search & Destroy and maybe put AVG Anti-virus back on to see if that works compatibly with Spybot.

I think the problem is related to Spyware and some type of computer conflict, bc the problem started when i purchased Spyware Doctor about 4 months ago. Seems to have gotten progressivley worse. I'm not the best PC maintenance person and may also have neglected some things i could do to get the laptop back in shape.

Should I try either of the 2 plans i just listed? or do these symptoms point to something else i may not be thinking of?

Thanks in advance for any help. dennis
