Can you ID this old rose?
Comments (6)Oh, and here's a suggestion to check out for rooting. There was a thread on the Roses Propagation Forum titled "how do you get rose cuttings to root?" (All lowercase letters in the title.) jrmakins in east TX describes a technique used by rustlers in the area. It's worth a shot, I think. In PDX, I simply pot cuttings in coolish moist soil in partial shade and about 50% take. My TX grandmother used the mayonnaise jar method which is similar to the coke bottle method on the posting. She was pretty darn successful. Good luck!...See MoreHelp with ID of old white rose?
Comments (51)Jackie, if you're still following this thread, here is a photo I found of reddish new growth on the mature plant that doesn't belong to me; this photo dates to August of last year, so the red cast to new leaves isn't only in spring, although it may be more likely then: That is about as red as I see anything on the plant itself. I did see some of this reddish new growth on the plants I rooted from cuttings this spring, but now the larger of my plants is putting out lots of leaves that are green from the start: Something I meant to ask about is the reddish stamens. My flowers pretty much always have a bright red tinge to the stamens, but someone familiar with 'Pax' said they didn't think that was characteristic of the plant. In the first photo you posted, it does look a bit like the stamens are red, but I'm not sure if that's just the lighting in the photo, or if your flowers normally have red stamens. Thanks, Virginia...See MoreNew house, old roses-part 2. White rose ID
Comments (19)I agree that it is probably FKD. If you look at the pictures of that rose on HMF, it shows several with pink streaks on the buds, and also blooms appearing more double than 36 petals, and also clusters of blooms. In addition, there is one showing buds which look identical to those posted by allencia. Jackie...See MoreNeed help to ID this old European rose
Comments (54)Another sad update, my cutting didn't make it :( We had a day where some rain blew under the verandah where they were and the soil must have gotten a touch too damp, because it started to go brown a few days later. All the other cuttings I had in the same spot were fine and are all leafing up nicely, such a shame! I'm actually about to move to NZ (long story...) and while I'm devastated to leave the roses here (especially my Teas), I'm sure there will be lots of rosy opportunities in NZ! I'm going to create another thread asking for recommendations for a slightly colder zone, as I have never had to deal with frost before! I can only hope that this Rookwood rose recovers from its brutal pruning and shoots again next year, perhaps I'll get some holiday time to come back and check on it!...See MoreB Eaver
