Paint Design Dilemma

ugly brick - help with paint trim color ideas

I do not have enough in my budget to render or paint over my ugly brick, so need to work with what I've got. The brick is such a murky yellow brown. The current trim is too drab and when I consider other houses around here with white trim - it looks too stark. Any ideas?Welcome suggestions from you clever and creative people! (ps am constructing an extended open arched portico over front entryway and over entire porch)....

You might start with a good pressure washing to unify what looks like some discolored areas. It looks like you're trying charcoal or black already. How is that working? Are you just wanting to paint the door and trim above? I have no idea why you're doing the extended arch. There is enough going on visually already. I'd focus on removing the bedraggled greenery in font of the wall and topping the flat parts there with nice big pots of colorful flowers. No one will notice much else if you do that right. Take your time, gather ideas and don't start any construction yet.

The brick is fine, and fairly neutral. I would choose a trim color in a deeper shade of your roof. It's hard to tell whether that means charcoal or a deep expresso brown. Paint the downspout the same color as the brick so it disappears.

No paint brick - that would be putting an inferior finish over a quality item. Its a nice variegated brick, not the heavy orange type that some people complain about. An argument might be made for applying a masonry stain to tone down a color... not that it needs it... but to put an opaque high maintenance plastic coating (eg acyrlic) isnt a good idea for the long term. I wholeheartedly agree w/above suggestions to remove the fake tudor and rethink those spaces under the eaves and around the windows- even just simple paint in a well-chosen brown that bridges the brick and roof colors would be a big improvement. Sometimes less is more, and I would argue that a handsome house in natural brick or stone and muted nature-colors is often the most beautiful house on the block. Then, you could put your $ and effort into some really lovely landscaping & perhaps pillars but I wouldnt get carried away with reinventing the architecutral elements - its very nice & balanced as is. Is that the view from the side? Looks like the street is off to the left?

I would paint the garage doors some color whose intensity mirrors the brick. I don't know what color because I can't see the roof color, which should also be taken into account. You could also paint your storm door the color of the front door to make both stand out.

Painting the cabs to a high standard is an investment in both time and money I would not do in a rental. Also, is the owner supplying the paint for the walls? As a landlord and a former renter, I would make sure that any colors chosen get the owners approval first. As to what shade could work best for you on the walls, can you share more pics? Agree with you that the current shade isn't working. And I would most likely paint out that bit of white trim to match the new wall colour, if the landlord approves.
