The Unthinkable: I Broke My Other Hand!
Comments (35)Thanks for all of your kind words. I'm trying to keep a positive approach to this latest unfortunate accident of mine. For those who asked, yes, my bone density is very good. My right hand was injured when the ligament tore while I was trying to open a jar. I had surgery in mid-February to reattach it. With this last injury, as I tripped on my little dog, I grabbed into the D-shaped refrigerator handle of my garage fridge with my left hand. My hand snapped backwards and twisted, causing a spiral fracture of the 5th metacarpal bone. DD is thankfully home from college for the Summer and is taking good care of me. I've already finished, "Beneath a Marble Sky", which is the (wonderful, sad, tragic, amazing, happy and romantic) story behind the building of the Taj Mahal. Loved it! I'm now reading the last Tony Hillerman novel, "The Shape Shifter". My hand is hurting more than I anticipated, but I'm taking good care of it and me. Comments (30)I'm trying to remember, and I don't think I EVER saw lamb in...um...where I was before. I could find it an hour away at a (very expensive) meat market, but not locally. I seem to recall seeing veal a couple times, but veal is something I won't touch, and so would not notice its presence/absence. Forget finding any bread that wasn't "fluffy" or any fish that wasn't catfish. Don't even think about finding any kind of "exotic" mushroom/pepper/fresh herb. Basically if it can't be sugar coated or deep-fried, isn't hugely processed, doesn't have at least 20% salt/sugar and doesn't contain transfats, forget about finding it there. And forget eating out unless you like fast food or lower quality chains. (They were all a'twitter when Huddle House opened.) Now here? It's not like California where I could literally find anything, but it's pretty darn good. The only thing I've found really lacking is availability of fish (except that d#mned catfish...what the heck is it with the blasted catfish everywhere?) and I do have to really hunt for things like tahini, miso, etc....See MoreMeat Cleavers and Knives
Comments (30)I've used a Chinese chef's knife (sometimes called a Chinese cleaver) as my principal knife for the last 40+ years. With some care to strike squarely it can halve a chicken in two blows. (Strike at even a slight angle and it can slip, cut you and/or permanently damage the edge.) The same knife can be used to do something as delicate as peeling an apple (which I do regularly) or carving a radish rose (which a chef friend does regularly). Dexter-Russell makes very good Chinese chef's knives. They are the only knives in the kitchen of our favorite Chinese restaurant. (The chef-owner is the friend I mentioned.) We have two in our kitchen - a largish one for me and a smallish one for DW. They retail for $30-$35 in restaurant supply houses and $40-$50 from consumer cooking sources. I recently had an opportunity to try the $175 Shun Chinese chef's knife that I have long coveted. It felt nice in the hand, was amazingly sharp out of the box, and will doubtless hold its edge better than my Dexter-Russell, but there is no way I could justify spending the additional $140....See MoreHere’s the estimate
Comments (28)i suggest you get estimates from places other than DEALERSHIP... always WAY more money. I had a front headlight go out. just happened to be in area, so stopped in parts dept. of dealership. the BULB was gonna be something like $35 or more... then there would be "labor". I have 2 of those auto parts chains near by, both had very similar prices. had BOTH front bulbs replaced since they were original to my 04 Sante Fe. they put them in for FREE... total for both bulbs and install... less than $30! i'm frugal (some say cheap) but but use that estimate as a starting point. i'd go to body shops and come right out and say... beat this price and you have my business. also let any competition know you're still "shopping"... your repair isn't something that really needs immediate attention. i needed a new tire sometime over past year. had flat, OLD tire couldn't be repaired. figured tires sorta come in pairs... sure i bought them as a pair. had three tire places within walking distance of each other. told each I was "shopping" but buying real soon... not riding on spare any longer than needed. only one was willing to negotiate... he gave me a 10% discount on one quote that was lower than his... he got my business! I even contemplated getting a membership to Costco, but their prices were no better than strictly tire places....See MoreDawnInCal
