food mill or food strainer?
Comments (33)That deal you missed isn't a very good one anyway.. It looks like a very old version of a Victorio food strainer and they were very messy, and leaked out the shaft. The latest version is from Villaware and has a wrap around plastic shield to keep spatter down to a minimum. Also, the berry screen, as an option will get all the seeds out of raspberries and so you have a perfect seedless jam. I use it for my tomatoes and the skins and seeds pass out the end, which, on the newer Villaware, is another 4 inches of clear plastic cone to push out the waste even further from the metal conical strainers. The Villaware also has a rubber seal on the cranking shaft that stops any leakage from flowing out where the handle is attached. Cutting big tomatoes in halves and smaller ones are left whole. I can 'crank out' a bushel in less than 10 minutes. Very little effort compared to a Foley and works great even for small bits like for salsa, and even pumpkin. I sold my old Victorio for $5.00 a few years ago, but still have a similar Back To Basics model, that has the older wing nut screen design of the Victorio., but that shaft still leaks when I do watery stuff like tomatoes and even raspberries....See Morefeeding tube at home - what to expect
Comments (16)He was signed into hospitals as DNR at everybodys urging because of his age and conditions. Nurse initially noted No heroics resulting in Long Term Machine support, feedings Ok .. something like that. Bit of a ramble / Update... Dad ended up about two months in hospital - evenly split in 2 different hospitals. Diagnosis and treatment for dyspagia(swallowing prob), COPD(broncidus), generalized weakness. And he aquired pneumonis almost instantly in hospital. They blamed it on asperation. Which I wouldnt doubt as the nurses and aids didnt seem to keep in mind he had asperation risks. From so much time in hospital beds, Dad's lost abilities to transfer to wheelchair and what little use he had with his walker to go pottie is gone completely right now. Old left stroked leg has started pulling up after about three weeks in hospital and he can't seem to control now very much. He is getting some in home physical therapy, supposedly 60days worth, three times per week - hopefully will get him a bit mobile. Sent him home from hospital with a catheter, to be removed day one at home by a nurse... He didnt pee all day after she removed it... nurse couldnt get new one reinserted that evening ,,, ambulance trip to ER to reinsert. Apparently no peeing is pretty serious stuff. ER/Hospital lab called about four days later,,, has a urinary tract infection(Klebsiella). They called in prescription for Horse size pills for 10 days, supposed to fix it. Still has that catheter - GP doc appointment in a couple days. Maybe he'll tell nurse to take it out again. Had 2 poops after first arriving at home from Kindred. One massive one. Then five days no poop at all. Back to ER. They cleaned him out with long tube enema...soft stool/xrayed no blockages . Perscribed 30cc milk of magnesia twice daily. Tonight will be third day no poop again. Geeze. First hospital tried about a week of physical therapy right after inserting stomach tube,,, all the while his ankles were swollen big, he was very tired, on antibiotics with pneumonia (MRSA). All the while in 1st hospital therapy wing he was really sick - that wing apparently is with unskilled nurses? ... finally doc moved him to skilled care room and potent antibiotics. Leg started retracting then. Discovered his feeding tube leaking,, not sealing right at stomach penetration... mechanical fault perhaps... removed old one, gave him a new one. Hospital Doc gave him a choice after about a month,, Has severe bronchidus(COPD),, Pneumonia. He's not getting better... he could send him home and die with hospice care, or take a very slim chance send him to Kindred (hospital) which specializes in lung desease and phy-therapy,, to finish off a second dose of extra stong antibiotics to see if they could clear the pneumonia,, along with they could give him longer physical thereapy there to try and get him at least transfering back into wheelchair. Kindred apparently is one of two hospitals in SE with some kind of super extended Medicaid or Medicare which apparently regular hospital was trying to get rid of him because time with insurance was up. 1st Hospital Case managers asked me a couple times about where to discharge him to Hospice while he was still being treated. I would say well he's scheduled for tests to try to fix him, why would you discharge him ? Anyhow Dad told Doc he wanted to try to get better. That apparently bought him a few more weeks of care in Kindred. Now he's home,, wow, lots to care for right now. Wish he could get into the car for a haircut and doc visits....See MoreS/o picky eaters and lunch at school
Comments (38)Annie, I actually don't have a problem with Sebastian choosing to socialize rather then eat, well not with Sebastian anyway. I feel that part of why he is going to school is for the social part. I hate the way the schools devalue eating and socialization. The other problem is the cafeteria, actually it is a cafe-gym-atorium and it is loud and awful. All the kids prefer it when they have lunch in their classroom, at least according to my informal poll. lol, I have often had much with them in the cafeteria and once in the classroom. They were much better at eating while socializing in the classroom. The problem is lunch is when the teachers get a break. I would like teachers to eat with them and have their break during recess. My felling about food is make sure to feel good about everything you serve so it does not matter what they make a meal of. I told a friend of mine when we had 1 year olds, serve them good food and don't pay attention to what is on the floor or still on the tray. So long as you served it it counts. I don't even make my kids take a bite. I tried that once and the gaging etc was not worth it. Plus he had built up that he would not like it. I have told them if it is on their plate and they don't want it, don't talk about it. If they say something is disgusting I will require a bite, ignore it and I am fine. I just hate to have my food insulted ;-) Also they will need these manners for other peoples homes. My kids can have problems in the house of some peers as they are used to a certain level of food. They will not eat frozen pizza, super market rotisserie chicken ... We have friends who eat frozen pizza, when we go over to their house for pizza we bring dough, sauce etc. -Robin...See MoreKitchen storage and adult kids.....
Comments (25)When I retired I built a double wide as my retirement castle. I couldn't afford a basement and the two car garage I had built was never intended to hold a car. A quarter of the garage is an insulated room that is the dogs' kennel. The garage must hold everything I need to maintain 5 acres out in the country. I have a huge riding mower, two walking mowers, a huge snow blower, wheel barrow, small cart I can pull with the lawn tractor, the usual snow shovels and gardening tools, multiple 35 pound bags of dog food (I buy only when on sale and buy in bulk)lots of cat litter also bought on sale, my generator, numerous gas cans, all my recycling barrels, birdseed, a wall of shelves for storage that can be out in sub zero temperature, hoses, several large dog crates....you know, all good stuff. My house in 1037 sq. feet, three tiny bedrooms, two full bathrooms, no dining room. Two of the bedroom closets are small. The one in the master bedroom houses a huge water softener and treatment system. I still can't drink the water so I buy 10-12 gallons of cheap bottled water every month. I drink diet Coke and buy a huge number whenever it goes on sale for $1 per 2 litre bottle. Water and Coke can't stay in the garage when it is cold enough to freeze. I buy my K-cup coffee on sale and in huge quantities. My kitchen has a tiny "pantry" cupboard. The two smallest closets hold various stuff, upright cleaner, paint cans, Christmas wrapping, --I'm sure you get the picture. I am not a hoarder and throw out "stuff" several times a year. Even the second bathroom in my house does double duty because there are two large litter pans in the (unused) bath tub and a canister vacuum. I live out in farm country. There is a pretty well stocked mom and pop store 6 miles away but their prices aren't the greatest. I don't know how a family of four is expected to live in a house like mine. One small bedroom holds my computer, stereo and TV. The other little bedroom holds all my light house collection and tons of books. My kitchen can't possible hold everything that belongs in there. I have given up apologizing for the amount of "stuff" in my house and garage. I won't give up buying in bulk while on sale and it is just too bad if you come to visit because the only place you can sleep is on my couch. Tell your kids to provide you with some storage room in their houses! Nancy...See Moreediej1209 AL Zn 7
