Kitchen storage and adult kids.....

How do you get across to adult children why your cupboards are full of food and need extra space in adjacent room closet to store kitchen stuff now that we are retired. We eat 99% of meals at home. Our kitchen is a small gally type with limited storage, although every inch is used for cabinets.

We have 5 adult children with their own families and they do not understand in order for the 2 of us to have a variety of food to eat and also save money it is necessary to buy some things in bulk, buy on sale. I do not run to the grocery store frequently. We do not waste food. Cooked food not consumed in a couple of days is tossed into a pot of soup and frozen for future meals.

When children were growing up they ate food almost as fast as it came in the door, thus, no need for storage space. Also I did not have time to play with baking bread and using bread machines as well as baking by hand and in speciality bread pans, etc. Space is needed for larger items. Grandchildren come over every week and go thru chips and goodies fast, I don't want to go to the store every time they come over.

Every time I try to cut back on food in the cabinets I end up having to run to the store for an item or two before being able to prepare a meal. I like having my own grocery store!! I date items and store in rows so food is rotated and do not expire.

Our adult children do not understand and just shake their heads!!

This afternoon one daughter came over to see if I had several items she needed for a couple recipes, yes, I had what she needed. Hmmm....they seem to like mother's home grocery store in a pinch!!!

The extra cabinet space in next room contains oversized pots/pans, 2 gallon vinegar (use in laundry and other cleaning), large box Splenda, chips, waffle iron, 2 crockpots, large mixing bowls, bread pans, cutting boards, and tablecloths.

We are not fast food junkies like the younger generation!!
