We make junk in the USA, too. I've seen it in home furnishings. Better to learn what makes a quality piece and use your eyes and knowledge to see how its put together. I've seen product out of Vietnam that us superior to several USA-brands.

As far as Restoration Hardware, my friend Alan Price who is a top leather furniture designer in the industry, just left Hancock and Moore to work exclusively for Restoration Hardware and will have a new portfolio of designs for them, to be built at Sherrill. And Sherrill knows how to do it right. Stereotypes don't really work in this industry, but knowledge of the build does.

The USDA standards are established principally for the home food preserver. Many recipes are not USDA-approved but are still tested and safe. Lots of labs have that capacity. For example, Oregon State has a small entrepreneurship program which supports new purveyors of small-yield bottled food products and offers lab facilities for the testing to assure products are safe for sale. However, they would still have to be safe when processed and meet FDA plus any state regulations. Basically it comes down to the credentials of the person(s) who wrote the book and what they have done to assure food safety according to the criteria Dave indicated. One of the problems I have with many recipes/books is that the author(s) may have credentials but not necessarily credentials appropriate to home food processing. So Rick Fields, for example, does sell commercial pickles and relishes. However, he has available to him processing equipment not available to the average home preserver. Without his assurance of specific testing and safety in the home environment who knows how suitable the recipe is? I might add that in the home environment developers of canning recipes need to be sure they fall within a certain margin of error because there's more individual variation when you have many cooks using different product. In a commercial environment there's much more consistency. So Beverly Alfeld, for example, in her pickling book never goes above 4.3 pH, even though the limit for higher-acid BWB is 4.6 pH. She believes that leeway is important. Basically, I operate with a do not assume stance. I'm sure I could find something at WS, there's one in Grand Rapids that I wander through whenever I get the chance but seldom buy because it's so expensive. Maybe really good knives, and I bought my farm animal waffle iron there when they finally went on clearance. Elery left some of that copper cookware with the acorns here, but I never use them, they're too pretty, LOL. I'd love to have a couple more Calphalon hard anodized things, I love the 8 quart pot I use for jam and the 2 quart saucepan. I don't like the "everyday" pan with those two stupid handles on the sides, who the heck thought of that? I can't pick the blasted thing up and pour stuff out of it without burning myself. I asked that question a couple of times here and never got an answer, so I didn't buy one. That didn't stop Elery, though. He doesn't like it either, which is why it's here with me. Unused. As for the Le Crueset, I've never really wanted any. Elery has a couple of pieces and they're OK, but I still prefer my Lodge cast iron dutch oven, made right here in America. Never been to Sur La Table or Ikea or even Homegoods. I love Crate and Barrel in Chicago but I always take the train and I know I'd never get items back unbroken. Never been to a Kitchen Collection or Dansk outlet either. Iunderstand there's a Pfaltzgraf outlet in HOlland, about an hour and a half from me, but I've not been there yet either. Just so you know you weren't being ignored, yesterday I spent some time trying to locate documentation online yesterday. No luck. Wanted to leave the post up top in case someone has it. Sooz probably gave the best advice. While googling, I came across your other post here where you mentioned that the peach ice cream discussion is what's motivating you. So I just want to point out that the recent ice cream frenzy is for a recipe made with either a blender or food processor, no ice cream machine needed.

Kathleen, if you see more of the clear on the rocks style glasses (not the tall ones) or the tall multi-colored style please pick some up for me. I think I paid $8.50 each for two of the clear and a the set of six tall multi-colored was about $48. If the price is really good (less than half)I'd take some more! AMCK- I have the tall multi-colored ones. If I knew that the glasses with the monogram were available, I'd have snapped those up instead. I don't think they were in the stores. As I said before, I also bought a couple of the clear to use upstairs. We did an addition with small area that houses shelves, a below counter fridge and microwave. We don't consume much upstairs, but when I'm working or someone is ill, a plastic glass is a good thing!

Duane, this information was not meant to be about quality, its about these companies getting their facts straight and honesty towards consumers. If you want to talk about RH, actually I just returned from Vietnam / China several months ago, not my first visit either. They are very good at somethings, especially wood furniture and the upholstery yes is getting better in Vietnam. Spent quite a bit of time at Rochdale Spears, Van Thiel and other factories their and in China, many who supply RH. My experience in manufacturing is that I can trust Vietnamese factories much more so than Chinese factories for the most part. Thats why your seeing movement from China to Vietnam for furniture. RH is doing some upholstery in Hickory, but they don't want to be a manufacturer, reason why their sourcing from Sherrills now. But I also know Buddy Sherrill and their manufacturing of upholstery. They come in at the price point that for leather that was acceptable for RH. And believe me RH is all about buying low and selling high.

I wish companies would be more transparent/honest about where their products are made. I just bought an RH Maxwell sofa and was surprised with the Made in China sticker. I thought is was Made in the USA (not the only factor for buying it), but it was a combo. Eight way hand tied springs, design/fabric choices, and got it in under a week. I've been reading that 8 way hand tied springs don't mean much unless it's done well. How am I to know? Not like I can rip open the sofa to inspect so I just have to trust the company to a large extent. The vietnamese made Maison bedroom furniture, all wood, seems VERY well done. The slope back arm chair arrived cracked at the joint where the slope meets the back -- this was also made in Vietnam. It is heavy and feels solid though so may just be a shipping issue...they're replacing it.
Their furniture is GORGEOUS and not something I see in most other furniture so I feel a bit torn. I'd prefer American made, but if it's made just as well, if not better, then I'm good with that. I just wish that they would warranty their furniture since the price tag is SO high.
