I'm missing something very basic about watering containers
Comments (5)Differnt weather, different situations, different plant size ....all mean different watering needs; it is not a one size fits all. A recently transplanted tomato plant will get pretty drenched to make it easy for the roots to get what they need. Of course a recently rained on pot may not get any additonal water. Great big healthy fruiting plants in the desert will get more water than smaller plants in lower temperatures. And sprouting from Seeds is a special situation. The point is you need to know what the plant needs versus what the plant has, then things fall into place. Its not that hard, but not paying attention to this will make for some unhelathy plants with not too many tools in the old tool box. I can understand your distrust of moisture meters, but again if one understand their limitations they can be useful;but I do not understand your distrust of the finger test. Get 4 pots- 3 with drainholes and a moisture meter. fill the pots with different kinds of mix, water 3 well, wait a few hours then come back and stick your finger and the meter in the different pots. this should give you a bit of an understanding of too wet, too dry and kinda right. Now your finger is kind of calibrated. If you dont want to use your finger get a 12inch log 1/4" threaded steel rod, and use this to push down in the pot and bring up soil samples from 6 inches below the surface. anyway just some ideas to take some mystery out of the water game. d...See MoreI'm not sure Revere Pewter is working in my living room..
Comments (21)I wanted to use Revere Pewter too -- based on photos I'd seen, but it didn't work for me. My local store stopped carrying BM paints, so I went to Sherwin WIlliams. We wound up with Agreeable Grey tinted a little darker at 150%. Accesible Beige was another color we looked at -- along with Anew Grey. I'd check those out. Next to the TV, I agree with moving the lamp to the other side of the room. I would put art on the wall, but before deciding on size or arrangement, I would look at a side chair there -- that could be pulled up for additional seating. Try one of your dining shairs there for feel and see if the idea works. You could have a small side table -- even a garden stool that could double as another seat if you entertain, and then fill in wall decoration. ETA I see graywings had the same idea was I was typing (and being distracted)....See MoreHelp! I'm at a loss about what color to paint my living room!
Comments (15)Anele, you know your paint companies palettes - the ming red was a Sherwin Williams color. I'm not sure it's still an active color, but they still have it in their formulary because I buy small cans for touchup and according to my record book, it's definitely called "Ming Red." Honestly, if it wasn't for wanting to paint the dining room the paprika I found, I'd keep the red in the living room. I'm just ready for changes. When I finally got rid of my eucalyptus-y/sage green in my family room and went to expresso it was kind of galvanizing. The gold is really a bit richer than the washed out picture and it still makes me happy, but I'm in the mood for a change. The current color is just a few shades lighter than the curry (same basic color family) you posted above - and it does make wonderful changes with the light levels throughout the day and evening. It took a lot of painted 4x4' squares I moved around the room to find it, lol. I like the idea of green, but I'm just not sure since I got rid of green in my family room. Then again, shades of green, reds, and golds have always been my comfort zone - although I was blues, browns, white and pops of red before I married. I don't really care that much about the living room rug - I can easily put it somewhere else in the house, probably my office - but I'm stuck with the chairs until my daughter moves out and takes them, she likes the retro Alhambra print, although I've toyed with placing them at the head of the table in the dining room and getting a couple of new chairs eventually for the living room....See MoreWhat's missing in my living room? Comments (21)Someone said: I believe the Houzz experts (and I am NOT one!) suggest the TV be 2/3 the width of the TV cabinet. No no no no no. The TV cabinet needs to be at least 25% wider than the TV. Wider is always better. There is no minimum size for the TV. Do not hang that guitar between the windows. Do not hang anything between the windows. Your curtains are perfect. Hang the guitar on the wall just left of the TV, get some art for over the sofa, and add just a touch more red to echo the arc lamp (which is tres cool, BTW). You've done a great job so far. You've got this....See MoreA Bev
