I'm at a complete loss for my new flowerbeds
Comments (17)With respect to the front bed, I'm on side with removing the tree. The trunks really only look good from one angle, and from the other angles it's not a real beauty. And when it comes to suckers, I have very low tolerance! But what really bugs me in that bed is the shrubs, and I would totally rip them out as well and use that space to create a lower profile flowering garden. My urge is to open the space visually. If you want a tree, I don't see that it has to be in the bed; it could be closer to the front of the property. With the long narrow bed, if liriope will make you smile, you're a pretty happy person :-) it takes more to get a smile out of me, I'm afraid! But in these long narrow beds against a wall, it is often about what will grow the way you want, rather than about what we like, and I admit I've got a long and troubled history with trying to grow more interesting things in a bed like this, because almost anything tall (anything deciduous in particular) will always be snaking away from the wall toward the light. As a general rule, evergreen material will grow much more reliably upright even when the light is one-sided. So from a maintenance and looking tidy perspective, you could do a lot worse than a row of liriope, daylilies, or annuals. So much depends on what kind of a gardener you are; how much effort you want to go to to choose and source plants and so on, and then what kind of maintenance you want to do. For example, what would look quite spectacular along this wall, and go with the somewhat manicured impression that the house itself makes, would be an assortment of specialty conifers and evergreens, the type that are narrow and slow growing, either upright or weeping or just narrow by nature (or even spiralled or otherwise topiaried), either just mulched or dressed up with colourful lower-growing plants. But those plants you have to go hunting for, and it takes some work to arrange them. And then there's the option of containers (on gravel or mulch) and/or wall art. Or vines on trellises, that would require you to tuck them all the time and then clear them in winter. It all depends on what kind of work you want to do initially and ongoing. But what about the area along the fence? You might be able to create a more generous bed there. You can certainly borrow light from across the fence, and if you can also borrow airspace above the fence, then some small trees might even work. KarinL...See MoreRugs... I'm at a loss... please help
Comments (18)Les - you are right that there is another opening to the room that comes from the entry hall. the one problem that I will be having with the rug is that NOTHING in the room is centered - b/c of the opening the sofa is not directly in front of the fp. The FP is 8ft wide. If I place the rug centered with the FP it will have a foot on each side and will sit just under the legs of the Loveseat and will cover to just the end of the sofa on the other wall. I don't know if that makes any sense - but I am attaching a pic that shows the entry way opening into the LR. We now have base molding up but I don't have any new pics. We do want to get some kind of a coffee table/ottoman. I am thinking more of an ottoman. We like to put our feet up. I just hate that the couches have to be so far apart - but the ottoman is moveable - and I was also thinking of getting 2 small square ones that can be tucked away and taken out for extra seating or if we have people over and are watching a movie - they would be able to put their feet up. I will look into getting something that is from the carpet store. Here are some that I have found on HDs site. Eloquence dark gold Mohawk Solid Squares - Biscuit Mohawk Constellation-Teak Mohawk Frise Shag Black (looks just like the teak one on the computer As for decorating and accessorizing. I definetely need help with that. Finding the right scale of artowrk and accessories has been hard. Dh and I were living in a small house (only 700sq ft) and everythng looked huge there - once we moved in here we realized everything was so small. So I am always looking for new accessories for the mantle and the walls. Ruth...See MoreI’m not sure what kind of rug I need for my living room
Comments (11)Saxa I don’t think those water fountains goes with our rustic/farm theme. I think they are to contemporary for my taste. Also my three cats would have a field day with them. They love playing in water. Thank you for your suggestion! Much appreciated Daisy and Val as stated in my OP we are going to lower the tv. It is too high as it is. The plan is to remove the mantle and lower it about 5” and then lower the tv. Everyone in our house is in agreement that putting it on the side of the fireplace would be ackward for anyone sitting on the couch in front of the windows. And yes the cable will be put inside the fireplace. We specifically added a wall plug behind the stone. We just haven’t gotten to it yet. I’m still looking for that perfect rug!...See MoreHelp! What color should I paint my living room-dining room?
Comments (4)Since it is all so open, I would paint the same color in the kitchen, dining and living. Maybe the creamy white of your dining chairs would work throughout. If you don't want to paint the kitchen, you could bring that same color into the dining/living. Or you could take another shade from that same color strip/card and bring that into the living/dining. Other improvements: your rugs are too small, and so are your lamps. Your dining light is dated and your art is dissonant and not hung correctly. The coffee table is too large and heavy, and I would match drapes to the wall color once you figure that out. I do like your red cabinet and blue cache-pot! Have you thought about installing drown molding? How high are your walls? Here's a creamy white on walls (Navajo White) and brighter on trim (White Dove) so you can get the idea, even though this is not the style of your home....See Morebeckysharp Reinstate SW Unconditionally
