I’m not sure what kind of rug I need for my living room

We just built a custom home and have been living here for almost three months. And I can’t decide what type of living room rug is appropriate for our style. Our house is what I would call a Texas rustic ranch (if that makes since). The whole look of our home leans rustic / farm style. We have a lot of brown (floors, couch, mantle and kitchen cabinets). Our fireplace is limestone ( cream, white and rust). Everything I’m drawn to blue but I’m just not sure If that’s the right color I should be using. Here are some pictures of the living room. the couch is dark brown , the curtains are a beige/ cream color (ok those are really painters drop cloth posing as curtains! Lol) . Wall color is SW silver strand. The wood beams are cedar.
The ferret cage will be moved and a storage console will be added in it’s place. The tv and mantle will also be lowered, as it stands they are to high.

4 years agoThank you Judy! A cream colored rug and it’s that simple. Love it! I’m not sure about the fabric bench. Would a light stained wood table be to heavy for the room?

Comments (22)claybabe, I would say go for a stacking FL set. If you are willing to change a few laundry habits and learn how to use a FL, you won't have any problems getting clothes clean. The fact that you are reading and posting here shows that you are open to suggestions and tipps, so I think you are a great candidate to make the switch. I grew up in Germany where TL with agitators don't even exist. When I moved here, I had the "privilege" to use a TL for a few years. The only thing I liked about them is how fast they finished a load. But that was about it...they just didn't clean well, tore several strings out of pants and shirts, ruined some bras...and I just hated the amount of water and detergents/additives needed to do a load of laundry. A typical load with my FL takes about an hour. The clothes come out clean and without any nasty odors. An extra rinse would add about 15 minutes, but is hardly ever needed/used. Some posters say that an extra rinse negates any water savings, but that is far from the truth. It takes about 4 gallons which adds up to a total of 18 gallons per load. A TL uses almost 25 gallons per fill which is 50 gallons if you do just one rinse! I think the mixed reviews for FLs are mainly due to user errors. Using too much detergent and liquid fabric softener is probably the most common mistake which leads to nasty buildup and musty smells. My washer is 18 months old now and doesn't have the slightest hint of mold. I don't do clean washer cycles or any extra maintenance. I just leave the door open and use hot cycles about once a week. Couldn't be happier with it. Our water usage in the winter is between 2000 and 3000 gallons per month for a household of three. That equals the city's minimum usage! Sorry for the long post. Comments (21)I wanted to use Revere Pewter too -- based on photos I'd seen, but it didn't work for me. My local store stopped carrying BM paints, so I went to Sherwin WIlliams. We wound up with Agreeable Grey tinted a little darker at 150%. Accesible Beige was another color we looked at -- along with Anew Grey. I'd check those out. Next to the TV, I agree with moving the lamp to the other side of the room. I would put art on the wall, but before deciding on size or arrangement, I would look at a side chair there -- that could be pulled up for additional seating. Try one of your dining shairs there for feel and see if the idea works. You could have a small side table -- even a garden stool that could double as another seat if you entertain, and then fill in wall decoration. Start with a good reliable soil test for soil pH and major nutrients and perhaps these simple soil test (which you have already alluded to) may be of some help. 1) Soil test for organic material. From that soil sample put enough of the rest to make a 4 inch level in a clear 1 quart jar, with a tight fitting lid. Fill that jar with water and replace the lid, tightly. Shake the jar vigorously and then let it stand for 24 hours. Your soil will settle out according to soil particle size and weight. For example, a good loam will have about 1-3/4 inch (about 45%) of sand on the bottom. about 1 inch (about 25%) of silt next, about 1 inch (25%) of clay above that, and about 1/4 inch (about 5%) of organic matter on the top. 2) Drainage. Dig a hole 1 foot square and 1 foot deep and fill that with water. After that water drains away refill the hole with more water and time how long it takes that to drain away. Anything less than 2 hours and your soil drains’ too quickly and needs more organic matter to slow that drainage down. Anything over 6 hours and the soil drains too slowly and needs lots of organic matter to speed it up. 3) Tilth. Take a handful of your slightly damp soil and squeeze it tightly. When the pressure is released the soil should hold together in that clump, but when poked with a finger that clump should fall apart. 4) Smell. What does your soil smell like? A pleasant, rich earthy odor? Putrid, offensive, repugnant odor? The more organic matter in your soil the more active the soil bacteria will be and the nicer your soil will smell, to a point. Too much organic matter can be bad as well. 5) Life. How many earthworms per shovel full were there? 5 or more indicates a pretty healthy soil. Fewer than 5, according to the Natural Resources Conservation Service, indicates a soil that is not healthy. Comments (15)Anele, you know your paint companies palettes - the ming red was a Sherwin Williams color. I'm not sure it's still an active color, but they still have it in their formulary because I buy small cans for touchup and according to my record book, it's definitely called "Ming Red." Honestly, if it wasn't for wanting to paint the dining room the paprika I found, I'd keep the red in the living room. I'm just ready for changes. When I finally got rid of my eucalyptus-y/sage green in my family room and went to expresso it was kind of galvanizing. The gold is really a bit richer than the washed out picture and it still makes me happy, but I'm in the mood for a change. The current color is just a few shades lighter than the curry (same basic color family) you posted above - and it does make wonderful changes with the light levels throughout the day and evening. It took a lot of painted 4x4' squares I moved around the room to find it, lol. I like the idea of green, but I'm just not sure since I got rid of green in my family room. Then again, shades of green, reds, and golds have always been my comfort zone - although I was blues, browns, white and pops of red before I married. I don't really care that much about the living room rug - I can easily put it somewhere else in the house, probably my office - but I'm stuck with the chairs until my daughter moves out and takes them, she likes the retro Alhambra print, although I've toyed with placing them at the head of the table in the dining room and getting a couple of new chairs eventually for the living room....See More
