Chandelier Size Above King Bed

Hello,

I have a 14.5” x 12.5” master bedroom with 10” ceilings and I’m looking to put a chandelier centered above the king sized bed. How big should the chandelier be?

We are hoping to fit the chandelier pictured below (Restoration Hardware Boule de Cristal 48” round). From what I’ve found online, this may be too big for the usual guidelines, but I am hoping it could work based on higher ceilings and the fact the chandelier is more open and light with the separate globes.

Hi P S,

We're hoping that those are typos that you made for your ceiling height and the length and width of your master bedroom. We're assuming you meant 'feet' as denoted by the single apostrophe as opposed to the double apostrophe, which would indicate inches.

Based on the dimensions found on Restoration Hardware's website with a minimum height of 21 1/2", you can reasonably expect it to be about a little more than 8 feet above one's head or away from the floor, depending on how you want to look at it.

A typical king-sized bed is usually 76" W x 80" L x 48" H. If this is placed on the center and the chandelier is hung at the center with an overall diameter of 48", you can reasonable expect it to easily fit within the space of the king-sized bed.

Insofar as clearance go, you should be fine and won't be hitting the chandelier standing up from the ground or sitting on the bed--if that is the concern. So far as light projection go, however, you probably won't be getting the kind of reach that you might be expecting from the glass-diffused chandelier, even if it is hung at its minimum height. Glass prism refracts and bend light in ways that is counter-intuitive. Nevertheless, it'll still be great for mood lighting and pizzazz for the master bedroom but for general lighting, it may be a better idea to consider a larger chandelier or have additional light sources like floor lamps and table lamps in the room.

Thank you so much for the help! You are correct that I meant feet :)

My main concern is the overall size/diameter of the 48" chandelier in relation to a king bed underneath and the relatively small master bedroom. Will the chandelier look too big and oversized for the space aesthetically? The size guidelines I've seen suggest a 27" diameter (adding the room dimensions of 14.5' + 12.5') or a 36" diameter if centered over a King bed, so I'm concerned 48" will look too big. I appreciate any guidance!

Okay, I posted some pics (links because I don't know how to do the pics) to some other pillows. They are shown for color and type NOT for the way they are placed here. I know that the consensus is that I need other shapes. I am looking. I do like the SW pottery one that was posted in a link above. I may order it if you think it would be good. Even though I don't really like the king shams (stripes) I have a lot invested in them and can't return them, so would like to use if I can get something that looks okay. I have taken pics of several different pillows. They are all basically the same shape besides the teal Euro and king stripe ones. There are two different sets of tan ones. One set is a little darker and then there is one with fringe. The fringed one seems to match both of the tan areas in the comforter. Then I found these pinkish pillows today and they are the same color as the pink in the comforter. There is also another picture on a side wall that has a pinkish hue that works with this. The last link is to another teal small pillow. I have two of these and they are in another room and could be used if needed. Another option is to buy a small decorator pillow in the matching material of the comforter. However, the only one that I find on ebay is about the same size and shape of the ones shown above. I could add a concho for decor if it would help. Ideas please???

I'm also a two king pillows with cases and two king pillows with shams user. Everything is white cotton or white matelasse, with a solid yellow quilt folded across the bottom. Our walls are yellow and the bed is against the wall. We have no headboard or footboard. Kitty cat sleeps on the yellow quilt every night. I also relate to your disappointment! I literally cried when my bed was delivered and set up, and called my sister on the phone I was so beside myself! I thought it looked so big and awkward and awful. I concluded I'd made one big honkin' mistake, and couldn't imagine *how* I could make such a thing actually look attractive. A little over six years later now, and I regard our king-sized bed as one of the best purchases we've ever made! Within a few months of living with it and adjusting my eye to it, I loved it, both in terms of how it looked in the room and how it functioned as a wonderful, dreamy place to sleep! I've linked below my favourite bedroom set from a pine & oak shop near us - we purchased new livingroom furniture from them this past spring and plan on buying the bedroom set from them in a year or two (need to save some money first!). We went from a King to a Queen. We downsized houses and our Master bedroom is smaller. The King just ate up the room and I also HATED putting sheets on the King. To make it easier to figure out which side was the top/bottom or side/side of the fitted sheet, I got sheets that had an up and down pattern. I decided to get the Queen and we personally like it so much better! We got a flanged bed from Wayfair-it is a platform-upholstered headboard and all the way around-so no sharp corners and is very sturdy. Hubby is 5'10 and I'm 5'4" so we fit in the Queen really well.
