I’ve never owned a king size bed but love how roomy they are when staying at a hotel. Of course anything that size comes with the problems of weight and size. Forget flipping it, and the bed weighs a ton.

i have this bed and I cannot tell you how many times I’ve barked my shins on the corners. It also has those flared legs that were made for stubbing your toes. I’m thinking of replacing it.

I have this bed and though I love how it looks, there have been injuries galore. Toes and shins. The bed came with a support board and our latex mattress just sits on top. We have a queen size, which is large enough, even with 2 cats. But I can see the appeal of a king.

We have both king and queen platform beds. One frame has a 4" bunkie board to give decent height to the mattress, and the other (Ikea) doesn't need one. About duvet covers: the king is actually easier to put on. Had twin guest beds at the old house, and those were horrible to stuff the duvets. The larger the opening, the easier.

I just got rid of a platform bed, partly because of the shin-banging, but also because in my small bedroom I wanted to reclaim the extra 8 or 10 inches it added to the bed.

We have always had queen sized beds and just recently bought a king. I absolutely love it - primarily because I am far less aware of DH's tossing and turning. It is a bigger pain to make the bed but I think the trade off is well worth it.

I really like a bed like cd7733 posted above but we have an upholsterd headboard and bedskirt arrangement right now.

Well you're certainly all confirming my concerns. I guess I will take a look for a more cushy type bed. I was hoping for wood for its cat hair deflecting properties among others.

We have a king upholstered headboard and platform similar to cd7733's photo above, and don’t have a problem knocking our shins. The biggest problem with king is the bedding. I do have to go to the laundromat to wash it. I have a super capacity top loader and it doesn’t accommodate a king quilt, let alone a comforter.

Once we got a king, we never went back. I am so done with expensive wooden "beds" that inevitably result in bruised shins in the dark, that we transitioned to just having a metal frame, a box spring, and a big ol' mattress on top. With something like a bench or trunk at the foot of the bed, and something like a headboard at the top, it looks quite nice. We have plenty of space in the bedroom, and I still don't want a huge bedframe to bang into.

Actually, what we have now instead of a headboard are 3 wooden decorative panels purchased years ago, and attached to the wall, that function as a headboard. Voila. I love it.

I had a king bed custom made a year ago. The base is similar to the one cd7733 posted. I've never hit a toe (too low for knees and thighs). We never owned a king before either, and now there is no returning. I have a small 10lb dog that sleeps under the covers, curled up to my stomach. Between her and DH taking up 2/3 of the bed with his pillows (and tossing/turning), the bigger bed has given me more room. It does not use a box spring (mattress sits on solid, fabric covered base), and I bought a coverlet that I tuck in the sides each morning. It is a small PITA to make each week after doing laundry, but it's not bad.

We have a king in our main house and a Q in our beach house. I don't really like kings, on aesthetic grounds. So ungainly. And I don't find the space necessary. Having met you and your delightful DH, I know that you are a lovely little sprite of a thing and could accommodate quite a few felines on so much as a fainting couch!

As for platforms etc, yes, whenever I have had them they have caused stubbed toes etc. Our Q in Maine is metal - no injuries but you need a hella lotta pillows to read in bed.

Ha-ha Mtn - maybe I should forget this whole king size idea for home and just continue to enjoy the jumbo size beds when I'm on vacation - special treat! I looked around online at the cushy upholstered beds and that's just not for me. I like wood and I know what you mean about metal. You can't just rest yourself up against the headboard for reading without a good bit of padding.

We got a twin when the boys were young -- we'd wind up with 2 kids and 2 cats in bed with us on weekend mornings. We had a metal frame for a long time but got a wood bed with a leather and wood headboard. The foot is like the side rails and just wraps around the bed without anything sticking out. I have really liked it, but when we changed the mattress, the bottom of the new mattress, used with a low profile box, is below the side of the rails. It makes it hard to tuck a fitted sheet in. We will either remedy that with a new mattress or try using just the headboard.

If you don't get a full bed, look for aframe like this one instead of the traditional metal frame. I've had more dings in my shins with those metal frames than anything else. These fiberglass frames are smooth and don't have any brackets or tabs to bang or cut you, they are lightweight and go together so easily. When my son moved, the movers said they wished everyone had this type of frame -- and I know my husband won't buy anything else if we decide to go with a headboard only. They cost more, but you will love it.

We have a California king—even though we live in Virginia, new mattresses/box springs have been easy to find. My tall husband likes the length and I much prefer the proportions over a regular king. We got another Calif king for our second home in Colorado because we like the sleeping room. We are not large people other than my husband’s height. Once I got used to the dimensions of the room and the bed sizes, I never tripped or barked my shins.

Most of our bedding can be washed in my large capacity front loader. In winter we use a wool filled duvet with a cover. The cover can go in the washer. The wool duvet goes to the cleaners.

We have a king. It takes up most of our bedroom. I don't care because my sleep is most important. We are not small and we like our own space. Even kicked the dogs out! Our upholstered frame curves in and is relatively low, making it feel ever so slightly smaller in the room.

Spanish, that looks so pretty. Reminds me of the first MBR i decorated and I told my designer I wanted it to look like a pint of Haagen Dazs vanilla.

thanks! It looks better when I make the bed. Because the bed is so large, we had a terrible time finding dressers and nightstands that would work. After more than a year, we bought the first thing we had looked at from Room and Board. Thank goodness we bought it, cuz it was discontinued shortly thereafter! Our nightstands are 18"!

My husband used a can of Scotch Guard and sprayed the whole thing down especially the frame, because we have 3 huge dogs. One lays up against the side every night and I can wipe it down if he smudges it. I vacuum it too! (Two dogs are black and one is brown, sooo much fur...)

We have a queen, but dh (6’4”) wants a king so we are making the switch. I have loved our queen bed for many years, but kind of excited to get a more clean-lined look. We have 10’ ceilings that vault to 19’ so can handle a bed with some height. Not excited about the $$$$ we are going to have to invest in all new linens...but excited about the process!

It's upright for me. I like the new bed, so light and airy.

We went with a king when we needed a new mattress last year. Our setup is similar to the one cd7733 posted, but different headboard. Our mattress is a split king and has independent adjustable mattresses. We love it. The ‘rails’ are padded fabric and the feet are well out of the way. I was also worried about running into the corners until I realized it wasn’t really a problem. Hasn’t happened yet.

We have a king as well. Found a simple metal frame with recessed legs to spare my toes. Didn't want anything with a platform that jutted out. There are some streamlined platform bed options out there but they are few if you don't want a more modern look. I have an inexpensive comforter from HomeSense that fits in my front loader.

New mattresses don't need flipping so that's a plus. The idea of two XL twin mattresses appeals to us and is something we'll consider when it's time to change.

We went from a King to a Queen. We downsized houses and our Master bedroom is smaller. The King just ate up the room and I also HATED putting sheets on the King. To make it easier to figure out which side was the top/bottom or side/side of the fitted sheet, I got sheets that had an up and down pattern. I decided to get the Queen and we personally like it so much better! We got a flanged bed from Wayfair-it is a platform-upholstered headboard and all the way around-so no sharp corners and is very sturdy. Hubby is 5'10 and I'm 5'4" so we fit in the Queen really well.

I'm in a queen, it's only me so I've toyed with even dropping down to a twin but not sure 100% about that. Most like will just go down to a full. But I was thinking about it again last night thinking I need to start thinking about a new mattress again...I sorta chuckled to myself thinking "how did the ex and I sleep comfortable in a queen?" LOL I'm only 5'3 or so but he's over 6ft...but I guess back then we were cozy.

Well based on all that info I guess I will be sticking with the queen size when the time comes - much confirmation of my thoughts about why I never wanted a king size.

I'm not trying to be a contrarian but I LOVE my king size mattress. DH tends to move around a lot and takes up a ton of space even though he's only 5'10". I'm 5'2". I like not to be kicked or pushed out of the bed or smothered. I'm just funny that way I guess.

As it is if he's particularly restless I have to be very aware of hanging on to the blankets so that he doesn't steal them all. He even takes them if we have separate blankets.

We have a low profile platform bed with a small footboard (no more than an inch thick. No problem with shins or toes. Consider it can be hard getting out of a bed that's too low.

We use two twin comforters. it's glorious. Having your own blanket is like a superpower.
