Range hood into existing chimney opening

Hi! I'm planning a kitchen renovation in an 1890s brownstone. The plan is to put the range into the original range opening in the chimney. I'd like to conceal the range hood in the chimney. (Note, I'm not planning to vent through the chimney flue, but sideways to the exterior). I'm looking at range hood inserts designed to be inserted into upper cabinetry, because I think it should be a similar-ish installation, and I think I can just get the CFM I need. I'm worried that there may not be enough height above the range opening to conceal the vent. Currently there is a sheetrock wall framed out in front of the chimney breast. I've done some digging but I'm a bit in the dark till after demo.

I'm just wondering if anyone out there has had experience of doing this? My concern is that if the range hood doesn't fit in the chimney opening, I don't have a plan B.

Yes we did it years ago. What is your ceiling height? Most hoods have enough room in the decorative chimney portion to have a ninety so it can go straight out the back wall- this is a very common installation. You just happen to need to go through a chimney after the ninety.

As long as the ductwork first the good is the appropriate 8”-12”, and it’s all hard metal, with no corrugated metal, the route that it takes through conditioned space is irrelevant. It’s the boundary between conditioned space and unconditioned space that you need to concern yourself with, and that must have the proper hardware. All of this should also be properly insulated, to prevent condensation.

Our HVAC contractor screwed our 36" (24" deep) chimney vent hood directly into our tile. It is very solid. There must be a way to attach yours with the tile backsplash in place. Only in new construction or in a total gut of the kitchen would one have the luxury of working with an open wall.

I'm still sad that I couldn't get the SS chimney hood that I wanted, but the consolation is that I don't have to dust it. I had to hide an AC duct in the cabinet along with the range hood ducting, so the chimney had to get nixed. I don't see the point of trying to guess what is going to be trendy in the future. I just read in another thread that staggered cabinets look dated, and my sister just redid her kitchen that way last year and she loves it. I think it looks great, too. If someone isn't telling us what's in, what's out, and what's trendy and what's not, we'd never know the difference and we'd be happy with the things we pick because they are the things that WE LIKE. To me, the point is to enjoy it NOW, in the present.

how about one of these? The pragmatic solution is caulking or installing a molding. The precise solution would be to scribe to the wall and ask a metal fabricator to cut your chimney precisely to those dimensions. I don't see how that would work for your existing chimney. So, most likely, they'd have to build a new one for you from scratch. That's going to be expensive, and there is a lot of potential for things to not quite work out. The other thing you could try would be to slightly recess the hood into the sheetrock. That requires some careful work when you patch up the sheetrock afterwards. Do you have a level 5 finish on the walls? Can't quite tell from the photos. That would make it even harder, as imperfections would be extremely noticeable.

The ceiling height is 8ft and the top of the range opening is (roughly) 56 in. So the question is whether there is enough depth above the opening to tuck it out of sight. Looks like the inserts are about 12" high.

Have you chosen a hood? The details will be in their instruction manual. 8’ is the ‘standard’ ceiling height so you should be fine

No I haven’t yet. I was thinking one of the cabinet insert ones might work best? I want to be able to conceal it in the chimney aperture so it’s not visible: and there won’t be 8’ of clear opening within the chimney breast because it narrows down to the flue connection for the original stove probably at the 6/6.5ft mark would be my guess
