Removing dead tree, keeping balance
Comments (7)As trees go, I thought the Eastern White Pine (if that's what these are) had a relatively short lifespan, 20 to 30 years in an urban setting; considerably longer in the wild. The demise of yours could be natural attrition if subjected to all sorts of pollutants and salts. I'd remove the obviously dead one and, perhaps, let the others play out as they will. For your purposes though, maybe someone with some background would nix or approve the idea of a leap to an Austrian Pine (Pinus Nigra) with its dense, pyramid shape. One specimen plant would balance out the remaining white pines. Suggested uses for Austrian Pine include border, screen, massing, windbreak, and specimen plant. Good backdrop for assorted other plantings, perennials, etc. Tolerates a wide range of soil types and is resistant to heat and drought. Tolerates air pollution better than other pines and is also salt tolerant. What kind of view are you screening out?...See Morecattleya orchids keeps rotting new shoots that come up
Comments (32)I've had this happen to me a few times over the years. I have never been successful saving the plant until recently. I'm curious as to the cause. I know it is said to be caused by a bacterial infection but I wonder if any real research has been done on it. When I moved a few of my plants from NY to Florida, one Catt was showing signs before the move. I cut off the infected bulbs and treated, but then I neglected most of my plants because there was too much going on. The infection slowed but each new lead would show signs and I'd cut it off. After settling down at a new house, I worked on the plant and wound up dividing it into three sections. I needed to cut so much off it literally came apart. I potted each section of about 3 bulbs each and stuck the plants under a tree, away from my other orchids and forgot them. Yesterday, I looked at them. They were dehydrated (no rain for over a month), they hadn't been fertilized in a year, but I noticed each bulb was forming new leads and roots. The plants were buried in oak leaves but appeared healthy. I'm still not trusting what I saw, am keeping them away from my other plants but all three pots appear recovered. So, I'm now wondering if - dehydration, oak leaves (change in pH) or just luck, seemed to work. If these survive, it will be the first for me. I'm thinking it might not be bacterial or even fungal. I'm leaning toward pH because I have always watered with RO but these plants only got rain. Any thoughts from those who have experienced what the OP is dealing with and any tips about what might 'really' cause it. Jane...See MoreBlack Cherry Trees (Keep them or remove them) seeking opinions
Comments (23)Thanks for all of the constructive comments. I have them scheduled for removal in about a week, but I am liking the idea of keeping #2 and am considering that option. If I keep this tree, I would would like to have some branches removed (those that are directly above where the maples will fill in in the next 10 years or so. I am not looking for perfect specimen trees and like the them to look more natural (forest like) with higher branches, and without perfect symmetry. I have marked up the branches that I would have removed (see those marked in red). The yellow represents the locations where the pruning cuts would be. My question is...... would this be too heavy of a removal all at once, and should I have these branches taken out over time? I would like to avoid sprouting, but I know that is a normal reaction (see tree #3 on far right from sever storm damage). Thanks for the great suggestions!...See MoreIs it better to keep or remove an unhealthy trunk from an oak tree?
Comments (32)oh my ... great debate .. some relevant.. some not ... lol ... just be done with it all ... plant a bunch to replace it.. looks like you have space ... diversify ... dont plant all of one kind ... think of it this way.. just nice round numbers .... 1000 bucks to remove it all .. or..... 850 dollars to surgically remove half without damaging the rest .. and a few years later.. perhaps paying another 1000 to remove the rest ... cuz prices never go down ... for sure ... pay once.. remove.. replant ... personally i would treat the stump so the roots die.. and leave it there ... and avoid the cost of grinding ... do use someone with insurance... since you have one of those LP bombs sitting near it ... ken ps: i wish those were real prices .......See Morefloral_uk z.8/9 SW UK
