Comments (17)Varmie I had PDM in a large container for about 2 years it grew beautifully. I then planted it in very poor soil ( my mistake). The soil was rubbish. Also i think it had a possum attack and as a result the rose was doing very poorly. So I repotted it in a large container, tidied it up cutting off the damaged bits and unhealthy growth. Now it is a ripper! So a lesson learnt---position and good soil. It was my muck up.The rose is actually very hardy-not fussy. W ith lots of TLC the rose is amazing again!!! cheers Michelle...See MorePrincess Charlene of Monaco - Super fragrant rosy surprise!
Comments (111)LL if you can grow then as climbers, or if you have a place for a tall rose, I would really recommend it. The height is perfect because it’s right there to enjoy the fragrance, which is fantastic. The only thing I should warn is that I notice mine need more water and more attention (feeding, etc) than others to be their best. I don’t feed my roses normally, but this princess gets fed....See MoreTell me about your healthiest, most disease resistant roses!
Comments (47)Oh no SoFl, I bought Sugar Moon on your recommendation and from smelling it in your garden..... I tried it and I liked it so much that I bought another one. Both of them are staying healthy. I really don't understand why some of the ones that do well here don't necessary do well for you and vice versa.... Maybe it is my salt air or something. I think you said you got rid of Regatta, IT is probably one of my best performers. However, I thought I killed it. Someone told me we should cut back to a third, I think I must have misunderstood and it was to be cut back only a third. For the longest time it was touch and go but it pulled through. Even in this heat it is looking good, no chilli thrips. When it blooms it blooms!!! Another one that I have that is healthy (from disease) is Outta the Blue. However, it does get spider mites If I keep washing it off it is also a big bloomer for me. I also have Dark Desire that is happy - no disease or insects. However, it is super super thorny and not a favorite in the garden. Believe it or not it is an own root . I do love the flowers in a vase if I feel like being attacked by her. I always feel like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz and the apple tree scene. Another one that I would claim that is pretty happy here in Florida is Distant Drums. She too is an own root. I figure it they do own root well here in Florida, it must be a toughie....See MoreAnyone grow both Princess Charlene de Monaco and DA’s Boscobel?
Comments (34)Lol, ok I can see that being funny “haha”, as long as that Tacca(sp?) plant puts out more than one bloom per season. I’ve always wanted to grow the white version, but it’s just so dry here! They’re so exotic looking. I know they can be grown indoors, but I run the A/C like crazy all summer, so it’s dry indoors too. Im finally posting the pictures of my pruned Princess Charlene de Monaco. Diane had me second guessing myself for a bit, but no, this is how I’ve always treated HT’s. I noticed around town that all the HT’s were pruned down to 12-18”, as well, so it must be a So CA thing. If I wanted PCDM to cover an arbor, I wouldn’t do this, but I need all the space I can get. My sweet peas need a place to climb while the giant roses have been cut back. This is what’s left of her. I’d like to cut that central and left cane a little shorter, but either my pruners are getting dull, or I’m getting weaker. I hope it’s the former, but fear it’s the latter. If I can remember to ask one of my sons, I’ll have him trim it a little shorter. Those canes are SO thick! I couldn’t cut through them any lower, even with my good Felco’s. These were taken near dark, so they’re not the best. This is PCDM #2 next to #1. The first one was just like it a year ago. She grew fast! These 6 blooms/buds were my reason for leaving the few long canes unpruned. Was it worth it? It certainly was! Having 6 of these beauties in early February is definitely worth leaving the canes on for a few extra weeks. Look at those long stems. Some buds are a little bug damaged, and twisted at the neck, but I’m glad to have them. I really love this rose! Lisa...See Morethreeboxerlover DEZ7a
