Help me design our Dining room!

For those who like more of a contemporary farmhouse design (or maybe my design arthritic is something else?), what do we think about this colour rug with my dining set and chandelier? The rug is currently in my kitchen that has blue cabinets but I’m digging it in my dining room however does it clash with how contemporary/traditional my dining set is? I would obviously order it in a much larger size for the space.
Black blinds are temporary!!! It’s just for privacy as we just moved into our new build. I plan on doing white or off white curtains to the ceiling with a black or gold rod.

Comments (8)So here's how I'd organize your dining room. Since you are clearly so handy, build a banquette the length of the wall under the opening to your front hall, painted to match the lower wall, with a reclaimed lumber seat, built in storage underneath (drawers are much easier to live with than hatch tops, but either would do), and add a bright fat seat cushion in a stripe or bold graphic print of your green, black and white. That would allow you to have fewer chairs, eliminate the need for chair clearance along that side of the table, and soften and warm up the space without losing your clean, industrial look. I'd use the bay window as the place for the sideboard, and customize the shape to the angles to make the most of the storage. Alternatively, a conventional rectangle would let you put a couple of tall narrow plants in the window - more life and warmth added. Then you'd have the option, if you have friends in for drinks and/or buffet supper, to push the table against the blank wall, and use the banquette for more casual seating. I'd furnish that long wall with a great big rectangular mirror - Ikea has several good choices - to open it up visually, and double the spaciousness of the wall opening over the banquette. Your hanging fixture could be chosen and installed so that it could be swagged up and toward the long wall, if you moved the table, so it would be low enough when the table was in its usual spot, and high enough so nobody would walk into it during a party. Comments (1)I'd kill for that kind of space. I would put shallow locker-like cabs opposite the washer/dryer so they are right there as you step in the door. I would make that cabinet on the opposite end of the L from the sink a tall mop-n-broom pantry with electrical inside to recharge hand vacs, etc. I would put a rod over the w/d, or try to find a few inches of space for one of these Arrow hangers. Perhaps beside the lockers, directly opposite the dryer. You could put a bench under it for changing shoes. Or boot storage, depending where you live. Comments (2)Thanks Patricia for taking the time to read my post! I agree with the built-in banquette seating. My finance is pretty convinced that it's a great idea for big family dinners (which is funny since most meals we eat out OR eat in front of the TV since we live in a condo and it's only the 3 of us). As for the pictures, I took these with a wide angle lens, which unfortunately distorts the edges of the pictures (ie like a fisheye lens, but less severe). I took them like this to fit more of the room into a single snap shot. While the drawing isn't 100% to scale, it, for the most part it shows the correct scaling of the walls, nooks and crannies. We're mostly hoping to have general furniture layout suggestions to keep the room looking not awkward, with clean sight lines from walking up the stairs, out the patio and from the kitchen (far screen left in the diagram; it's cut off, but will be a full kitchen that has a pony-wall overlooking the stairs)....See MoreHelp Me Design My Living+Dining room combo
Comments (13)You've received some great suggestions. I think lighting is key. I would eliminate the bare bulb floor lamp by the fireplace and find some attractive lamps with shades. One for the console table, a floor lamp for the lounge chair and a table and lamp for the arm end of the sectional. I would budget to have an electrician come in and move the boob light in the dining room to center over the table once you've reduced its size. Change that to a lovely chandelier. If you can't afford all of that, you can swag a chandy from that connection to a more centered position as in the kitchen below....See Morenjmomma
