I’d say it depends on the pattern if it’s too much or not. The grey sample would be too much for me, the other I’d be good with.

You need to show the choices.

Go to Home Depot and get the least expensive twist fiber in nylon, in a light neutral. The next person will rip out whatever you select. You are not staying long enough for it to matter.

Ps. Day forward from install? No bare feet. Shoes are not the carpet killer. Bare feet ARE. Add twice weekly vacuuming to your agenda:) along with clean socks or house slippers.

Jennifer - be sure and look at commercial carpeting. We did a large area with it (before selling) and it was fantastic for looks and wear. - and cost.

Last question - I think I decided to put LVP or laminate in the upstairs hall and bonus room at the end of the hall as long as it's not too many materials. With this mix, is it more important than ever to have all the same carpet throughout? Can I just put patterned carpet on the stairs only and plush in the rest? Does this mix work?:

Upstairs: laminate or LVP thoughout (except for carpeted bedrooms/bathrooms)

Stairs: carpeted

Downstairs: birch real hardwoods throughout (except living and family room and tiled laundry)

If you can avoid carpet altogether and choose all LVP throughout, then you can choose any kind of rug -- level or plush or either solid color or patterned and change them as needed at less cost..

Add the birch to the living and family room.For the length of your stay, you will not regret it, that's for certain. If you're leaving in a year it's one thing. Even then, I'd rip the carpet just before listing for a replacement carpet. Otherwise? The minimal time to add the birch? Yes. Living and family room. Your house will look twice the size : ) when you DO list. I'd at least look into it. Post a few pictures if you can
