Need help with designing garden in front of house (many pics)
Comments (15)lol Thanks for the comments and suggestions, people, I really appreciate it. I know that this is all just a work in process and most likely never-ending. The white stones rolling onto the sidewalk makes me laugh, because I am already constantly kicking them back onto their pile. lol I'll have to do something with the hedge, I appreciate the suggestion, but I'm still a little unsure of what you mean, catkim. If you read this, could I trouble you to explain one more time, please? Thanks in advance! Also, the fine mulch is a good idea, I think. The mulch that I had and returned were actually pretty large chunks. I like the idea of dealing with less weeds, I just spent a bit of time digging a whole whack of them out of this little area. Can I buy compost at a garden store? Should it be put down first, as a fertilizer, before any mulch is thrown down? Another question about the hedge: If I have mulch down and then I start to trim my hedge, I can see this being a pretty big headache trying to pick up the trimmed pieces of hedge from amongst my mulch on the ground. Any suggestions here? I'm sure I'll think of more questions, but I do thank you again everyone. PS, looking at these last pictures I've posted, my garden looks absolutely sad. I'm sure many of you wouldn't dare post them if this were yours. It is looking better already though, I assure you. Thanks! Andy...See Morehouse front needs design help
Comments (5)I would put shutters on the top windows, but they need to be wider than the old ones were. They should be wide enough that they could cover the windows if they closed. Instead of louvered shutters, consider paneled ones. Then, box in the posts on the porch to created paneled colums that will compliment the shutter style, and be sure to add one on the far left side for balance. I would not add stone around the bottom of the posts - I think it will make them (and the height of the porch) feel shorter by visually cutting the posts. No shutters on the bottom windows. Someday, if you can find room in the budget, I would replace the octagonal window with a rectangular one, in keeping with the rest of the house....See MoreNeed help with front-of-house design - first attempts failed!
Comments (5)Balancing out is always a goal. I am suggesting that the tree at the left be same species ... or similar size. Not that rigid about it as there is asymmetry to the overall house structure. ... Balance. It would be completely reasonable to interpret the 3 green mounds as possibly being boxwoods. I am not "covering the columns" ... just giving them a base. Would not want to see it taller than what is shown. I'm not picking plants; just giving you ideas of forms and sizes to help you figure out an arranging scheme. You'll be able to evaluate what might work well to create those things based on plants available for your area. You can consult with other forums on it as well. Also, look around your neighborhood and town and see what's nice that would work for you....See MoreI need help with front porch/entry design
Comments (9)Honestly? I think the gable adds nothing to the look of the house. In fact it doesn't go with the style of house. I would do as you have in the second plan but have the overhang just go straight across the front. Here's an idea of what I mean....See MoreUser
