Help with Entryway with stairs Flooring ideas

I would like to replace my carpet in the Living Room and Stairs. I have decided to keep carpet on the stairs but am considering wood or vinyl for the formal living/dining room. My entryway, kitchen and family room all have terracotta colored tile. The exterior is Mediterranean style with turret and tile roof and would like to maintain a bit of that decor. Are three flooring types in view at entry too much? If wood is a good option, what color is best with the

existing tile and should it be close in color to carpet on the stairs (which will be replaced)?

Yes....three flooring types inside of 2 feet is two too many. The issue becomes which floor to keep and which two to get rid of.

Right now you have the maximum amount of flooring options in a single space = 2. If you add a 3rd you will be kicking yourself in 1-2 years. It looks like tile is the best option for your situation so why not go with tile? I'm guessing the answer is, "Because there is a lot of tile in the home and I want to keep this a small project."

If you want to replace the carpet on the stairs and the sitting room, you are probably better off replacing with more carpet. This will allow for a refresh on a small scale. You will do this knowing full well that a massive flooring update will be coming in the next 5-7 years. It will give you time to save up for all new flooring.

If you want durable, you might want to look at the stone-like porcelain tiles that are available now. I brought a sample home recently that looked like limestone. It was a very light beige, nearly off white. You might need to visit a few tile stores to view a good selection. Each store only seems to carry a small number of porcelain tiles, but there are many styles available. Monocibec has some great porcelains, but I've only found 2 local stores in the LA area and they each carry the same one style out of the dozen offered by this company. We have a larger entry in live in a area with a lot of rain/snow. We have a good sized area rug in the entry and no issues over 9 years. We do have a carpet runner going up the stairs simply because I like the look and only installed it not too long ago as it wasn't a necessity. Often we use the garage as the entry and there is a long runner in that hallway where we enter there and no issues. We do have a boot tray in winter placed by the door. The front door is used daily to go to the mailbox and when company comes. I would find a great looking indoor/outdoor area rug if you go the hardwood route and are concerned. We have a thick wool rug. Still, no issues at all with the floor. Naturally, it's all personal preference and what you feel most comfortable with.

I get the dilemma. Perhaps you can get 2 pieces of the same wood as your steps and try a walnut stain and a no-stain-just-poly example. I’m torn between keeping the steps being natural with polyurethane or getting them a little darker for maintenance reasons. Steps take a beating, so unless there is a runner in their future (which doesn’t make sense with that gorgeous staircase) I would be concerned about wear and tear. But enough poly on anything is like iron, so going natural would absolutely work. My curiosity would force me to try to match the darkest line in the main floor. And yes, your floors are INCREDIBLE! What a gift to find these under carpeting!
