Can Lights for kitchen remodel
Comments (4)Most people do not realize that in most cases recessed cans provide what is called ambient lighting. That is the cans light an area but do not provide work area lighting especially if you are using flourecents. Also, unless you have spent high dollars those lights cannot be dimmed. Some cans are down lights to highlight art or some other object. As an example, if you have recessed cans in a living/family room and want to read you usually turn on a lamp next to where you are seated. Regarding your countertop situation, you would be better served with undercounter lighting. The "in" thing to do these days is to use pendant lights over islands. I am speaking as an electrician who has installed more cans then I care to count. There are also lighting designers who you can usually contract through lighting stores....See MoreHELP With Recessed Lights in Kitchen Remodel
Comments (4)Thanks for the input. My kitchen absolutely needs an island and my drawing may be deceiving because it’s not to scale. The wall between the kitchen and dining room that we just blew out used to have kitchen cabinets, oven range, and counter tops. With the wall gone I need to relocate the oven range to be next to the fridge and get my storage and counter tops back with the island. There is at least 42 in of clearance on all sides of the island except between the fridge and the side wall. Based on my research 42 in is plenty for two people. I am still open to suggestions and I have not hired a KD but open to the idea....See Morekitchen task lighting with no uppers
Comments (8)Flo - this is a remodel for a walkout basement in a cottage with the kitchen and main living areas in the basement. See attached photos for current state. The walkout wall has two large windows and a slider with a view to the lake. Our hope is to have the subfloor, insulation and walls framed in the next few weeks. There will be no window in the kitchen so lighting is important. There will be can lights but the wall with only shelves should have additional light I feel. I have not worked out where the lights need to go but need to make some final decisions before the drywall goes up. In the pictures, the kitchen is going to the left of the stairs on the back wall. I like the articulating light idea and I think it has a nice cottage feel. For a standard 8' ceiling , how many shelves would you suggest and then what distance from the counter would the light go?...See MoreHow many lights for a kitchen with a very limited natural light?
Comments (5)My research and experience say 450 lumens at the counter for task lighting. The light has to be placed in front of the person working at the counter to avoid casting a shadow over the stuff you're chopping with a sharp knife. Sizing the bulb requires consideration of the ceiling height for distance, the beam spread as a spot of 20* or 40* and the color temperature of say 3000k with good CRI like 90 for color accuracy. Juno has Gen2 2" can fixtures that are up there in price produce 1000 lumens at the bulb. If you have upper cabinets led strip undercabinet lights can add to overhead lighting. LED 17.5w A19(regular screw-in bulb format) 100w equivalent bulbs in 5-6" white recessed can fixtures($15) are the least expensive. 4 dimmable Feit bulbs are $7 at Costco in my state. These make good ambient lighting in bedrooms and kitchens. Maybe four for your 237sqft space. You can use them for flood overhead task lighting for a very affordable plan....See Morejslazart
