Lighting Design Dilemma Kitchens

Help decide on new lights for our kitchen?!

First-time homeowner here! My last post about my kitchen got so much love and helped me realize that all this kitchen really only needs is a new light fixture. The last pic is an inspo pic I liked but thought I’d leave it to the experts to let me lnow what would look best in my MCM kitchen! :)

It would be great if you could add a second pendant over the island to look balanced. Only having the one pendant not centered to the island looks odd to me. The recessed lighting would be great too.

If hiring an electrician is not an option at this time, I would look at some “offset” light fixtures. Sorry, I am not sure how to describe them.

I mocked this one up just for fun. It comes in white and grey, but I thought the green sort of matched the backsplash. I do hope you grow to love the green. It looks great! But, I must admit, I am a bit biased because my backsplash is almost the same color.

No idea if this fixture is MCM btw. 😬 I mainly picked it because of the offset design. I like how it makes it appear like it is centered to the island.

To me a kitchen light over an island needs to be very good at lighting the island . The one you show IMO is DR fixture and barely good there since I aslo like DR fixtures to light the table with good light on a dimmer .

You might be able to rub some thinner on the stained surfaces to pull out some of the color and then stain with the correct color, but this is a long shot. If there is any finish on the trim, then it needs to be stripped or sanded down to raw wood, and with the labor time involved in something like that, you may want to consider just replacing the trim to see which route would be more cost effective. Also, just because there was no contract doesn't always mean the painter has no obligation to fix something he screwed up. If he's an honorable guy and this is clearly his fault, then he should fix it for free or have his reputation damaged.

While I agree with you that the Electrolux looks great and seems comparable to the other brands, the reality is, Electrolux has numerous design flaws in several appliances and lacks any customer support. I too fell for the looks of an Electrolux built in ICON double oven and regret it. I have a Subzero side by side and love it. My sister has a Subzero side by side that is 15 years old and has only ever needed one out of warranty repair. Subzero does require an upfront investment; however, this will pay off over the life of the appliance. Electrolux spends a lot of money on looks, marketing and special incentive offers. This is all designed to lure the customer in and overlook the quality issues. Electrolux filters all reviews on their own website. When called out on this, they say the reviews are "reviewed" by a third party to distance themselves from this filtering process. Just look at their FB pages, comments and postings, over the course of a few random days. You will see for yourself the myriad of complaints about Electrolux products flaws and lack of customer support for yourself. After awhile, you will see for yourself the eerily similar stories from consumers. i wished someone had drawn my attention to the lack of any ownership of malfunctions by Electrolux and the aggravation of no customer support whatsoever. Avoid Electrolux and save yourself the aggravation.

I feel like your challenge is going to be having whatever you put up , show against the dark wood on the ceiling. You may want to look into doing a brighter metal finish. May not be as "farm house" as you'd like but would show up better against the ceiling.

I think you should lean into the MCM of your kitchen and get a light fixture in that style. If you have no other lighting in your kitchen, that light also needs to provide sufficient light for the space. I would not put a dining room pendant - type fixture over an aisle (and the one you like looks modern to me, not MCM, so I'm not sure it goes with the style). You need something that will give you enough light in the space so you can work.

Is that the only light in the kitchen?

If it is, it wouldn't be enough lighting for me at all, so I would be calling an electrician to figure out how I could add some 4" recessed light to properly illuminate the kitchen.

Have you thought about adding a linear light or adding a second pendant light? Here are some images that show both. If you really need light it also might be good to look into adding some can lights in the kitchen.

do you have under cabinet lighting/ It looks a little shadowy along the counter and the UV from the window is not great obviously. If you arent doing under cab lights I would get a directional track light.....Might be better than can lights w the ability to aim at strategic task spots along the counter , due to being a straight galley kitchen [I think] .
