How strong is Deodar Cedar?
Comments (10)If it's running into another tree that will affect the shape. They look best when not crowded. Also younger trees need to be allowed to keep their lower branches. They usually branch all the way to the ground. They're healthier and happier that way. I found a good sized one (more than 12 feet) today at the nursery for a nice price. Getting it home was very amusing. It completely filled my safari van so that there was hardly room for me to drive. If the branches were not so spaghetti-like it would have never fit. The top was doubled over against the windsheild. My son just looked at it in the yard and asked how in the world did I get it in the van....See MoreAtlas Cedar, Deodar Cedar?
Comments (1)Yes. They are fairly common in older gardens of Charleston, Beaufort, and Savannah. Problems are not enough room, ignorant irrigation cycles, and unavailability. Look in cemetaries, and older properties and you will find them....See MoreDeodar Cedar Silver Mist
Comments (3)That's my Silver Mist on the right (pardon the patio under construction) I bought a 5 gallon (24-30") Silver Mist off a guy at a trade show several years ago. It had a similar form to yours and since the tag said 8-10 ft tall x 5-6 ft wide I thought, this will be awesome. I planted it and it ROCKETED to 6 feet tall. There was no way this was going to max out at 8-10 ft. When I was at this super amazing conifer nursery in Maryland I showed a pic to the owner to see what he thought, and his immediate reaction was "oh god you need to cut that central leader NOW or that thing is going to get huge!" I'm no conifer expert, but based on that feedback, my experience, and the shape and form of all the other Silver Mists I've seen? If you don't cut that leader back, I'd expect more height. Once I took the leader out it's been a pretty well behaved tree, and I love the shape....See MoreGolden Deodar Cedar
Comments (6)it appears it started a new leader a few years back ... it shouldnt die due to this ... and it makes me wonder if there wasnt some damge way back when.. when the rope was applied .... but its going to take a few years.. to be pretty looking again ... i had a number of large garden tour thru my garden over the years .. nobody really cared about the regular old plants .. having seen dozens of them in their touring ... but everyone was thrilled with the oddities .. its all they could talk about ... and most of those oddities were caused by damage when they were younger ... so thats an upside ... i would talk with the seller ... but i wouldnt hold out hope of much of anything ...unless you have an ongoing relationship with them ... i wonder if its too early to harvest grafting scion wood??? ... wonder if some place like conifer kingdom might be able to use it???? if you planted them all over two years ago.. the stakes would have done their work.. and probably be removed ... and i wonder if the staking had anything to do with the ultimate failure.. trees would blow in the wind.. but the staking may have prevented that ... of course.. that said.. WTF with the rope .. right??? ken...See Moredirtygardener
