No season draws us to water like summer. This is the time of year when we get to experience coastal living for the day or the season, or, if we’re really lucky, maybe we live there year-round. If you’ve been at a lake, river or the beach, we want to see it.

For their vacation house on Waiheke Island, New Zealand, a couple asked architect Julian Guthrie for something simple. “It’s a true [vacation house] with a really relaxed feel, the opposite of their other home, which is very white and full of art,” Guthrie says.
The cedar board home, designed as three separate pods, tucks into the island’s native landscape. Extensive decks and breezeways expand the living space of the 1,075-square-foot house and take advantage of its picturesque view of Sandy Bay, a few hundred feet below.

To save money and cut down on his commute to work, Lee Thornley had this 48-by-11-foot barge constructed and moored on Regent’s Canal in London. “We get ducks swimming by, and a coot was raising its chicks alongside us,” Thornley says.

This waterfront property in Fairlee, Vermont, has all the trappings of the quintessential weekend lake house, which was exactly what the homeowners had in mind when they hired Smith & Vansant Architects. The architects designed and built a new home where a 1930s-era structure once stood. Inside, the house has the amenities one would expect from a 21st-century house, but outside, re-created details, including the screened-in porch facing Lake Fairlee, take you back.

Tom and Malinda Macey’s 485-square-foot floating house in Sausalito, California, took time since the couple remodeled it, piece by piece, over 12 years. The Maceys lived in the house through the remodel, during which time Tom, who works as a construction superintendent, added built-ins, replaced floors and raised the ceiling, often repurposing leftover materials from job sites.

This Alaskan yellow cedar deck the Thornquists built runs the length of their home, with steps leading down to that favorite beach. Benches topped by 7-foot-long cushions create a comfortable spot to relax and unwind while viewing the water.
