Golden Deodar Cedar

The top of my cedar has been strangulated. We planted our tree in May of 2019 and just now 6feet fell off. It prior must have had a rope on it at the nursery. We did not have one nor noticed it had been grown over. Do I need to protect the new top from winter? I’m so sad, it’s so lovely.

It should be replaced by the nursery, Have one of their people come out and take a look. So sad.

^^^ Sounds good in theory but I don't know of any nurseries or garden centers that will warranty a tree for replacement for almost 3 years! You're lucky to get 12 months from most. I think you may be on your own with this one.

I hear what you are saying, Mark. Some cultivars have grown true to form since their discovery while others have morphed into such a mixed bag where you're not sure what you may get. The cultivar Picea glauca 'Cecilia' comes to mind. There is the original 1-2 inch annual growth ones and a somewhat revertive 3-4 inch annual growth one out there. Once someone starts grafting a morphed specimen or perhaps a side branch instead of a branch more apical the cultivar changes and its out there forever. None of these are rare items, many of them are tall as well. Eastern redcedar (Thuja occidentalis) is one of the most common items (although represented mostly by cultivars in outlets rather than the less distinctive typical plant (ordinary wild species)). Himalayan cedar, Atlas cedar, Austrian pine etc. all standard fare, the kind of thing you could pick up at a big box (Lowe's, Home Depot...) or even a supermarket, in season. Hopefully you will do a little more research first and hit on some more interesting and appropriate choices, if you don't have acres one or two of (most of) these will fill the whole place up with yet another Deodar, Atlas cedar, Austrian pine... Including those in private and public collections probably at least 2000 kinds of trees are being grown in the Seattle area, there is lots more potential than has been discussed here. If you go look at some existing specimens of trees that catch your interest before making your final choices you can get a better idea of what you will think of them yourself later. Cedars are not friendly to pruning. They don't come back like leafy trees. If you prune them back too far, the entire limb dies. If she only wants northern looking plants, she's pretty much out of luck. There are evergreens here, but there aren't a lot of northern plants that do well here. She doesn't have to grow palms, but she's going to go through what every other northerner like her goes through -- a stark realization that if you want northern plants, go back up north. I came here from SC, brought a lot of plants with me, most of them died. I moved from SW FL to N. Florida to be able to grow more temperate plants, but I'd been in SW FL so long, I now miss my tropicals. It's sort of an "adjust or go home" thing with gardening here. Some "northern" plants she might like are crinums, amaryllis and daylilies. Hostas - no. There are a few heat-tolerant hostas, but nothing like they are up north. Lilacs - no. Daffodils, tulips and most spring bulbs - no. Many, many other plants I can't even begin to list - no. Tell her to go to a local garden center and tell them what she's looking for and they can help her get plants that will make her happy, but she's never going to recreate her northern yard down here.

it appears it started a new leader a few years back ... it shouldnt die due to this ... and it makes me wonder if there wasnt some damge way back when.. when the rope was applied ....

but its going to take a few years.. to be pretty looking again ...

i had a number of large garden tour thru my garden over the years .. nobody really cared about the regular old plants .. having seen dozens of them in their touring ... but everyone was thrilled with the oddities .. its all they could talk about ... and most of those oddities were caused by damage when they were younger ... so thats an upside ...

i would talk with the seller ... but i wouldnt hold out hope of much of anything ...unless you have an ongoing relationship with them ...

i wonder if its too early to harvest grafting scion wood??? ... wonder if some place like conifer kingdom might be able to use it????

if you planted them all over two years ago.. the stakes would have done their work.. and probably be removed ... and i wonder if the staking had anything to do with the ultimate failure.. trees would blow in the wind.. but the staking may have prevented that ...

of course.. that said.. WTF with the rope .. right???

Disappointing YES! ... though, in a few years time that now new leader will straighten and fill itself out to nicely replace what had been lost, just needs time, but |I understand your frustration!

They are responsible for the trees failure and for keeping the problem hidden from the buyer. If they have any integrity, they will replace it.

Something to be aware of is, if the top was taken care of so poorly, I hate to think what is going on with the roots.

If it were mine I would tediously excavate around it to see if they are deeply knotted. It can in some cases be so bad the plant is never going to successfully grow to full size.
