Way too many things not related going on My advice take everything out then add back the things you absolutely need and I like grovers idea of smaller scaled furniture for sure and that plan gives you the same number of seats. You need bigger art hung lower and the TV is too high get a cabinet for under it that allows the TV to have with the center of the screen at eyelevel when you are seated. I would do a cabinet to match the color of the ones in the kitchen

Devin, if you want to seat this many people, I think the dog may have to give up his window.

If you are able to get smaller furniture and measure carefully, you might shift the whole seating arrangement enough to give the dog a foot or so behind the couch. This has the added advantage of centering the sofa between the windows opposite the TV.

Look for sofas with slim track arms for more seating space, and legs for less visual weight.

I do like these plans and thoughts, and agree with some, but doesn't having two couches make things "heavier"?.

Then the two chairs opposite the window, wouldn't that close things of?.

Wouldn't it be better to have the current arrangement, just "smaller" furniture?

Two sofas gives you an extra seat, but you can certainly do one sofa and four chairs. I would, however, replace the two big chairs nearest the dining area with smaller ones, and I would move the one that's currently next to the TV console into the conversation area to eliminate traffic in front of that seat.

You have a bunch of competing requirements here: maximum seating and unencumbered windows for pets require you to sacrifice optimal spacing and desirable traffic patterns.

Before you commit to new furniture, perhaps you could rearrange what you have now just to get a feel for it. Maybe move the two bigger chairs out of the room and put the bench at that end facing the chairs and just see how it feels.

I would definitely consider a lower sleeker media cabinet and lowering the TV while you're at it.

Another thing, we like the tall wing back chair because it gives different heights .... Instead of everything the same height.....?

But do agree that it could be a sleeker chair...

I promise I'm taking all these ideas and thoughts into consideration.

There was a limit to what I could remove from your room, but I gave you a new TV stand, lowered the TV and your art, gave you a rug big enough to hold all the seating, and a glass coffee table. I removed the chair on the left. I would replace it and the wing chair with smaller chairs facing the window.

I do like the tv console idea! We used to have a glass coffee table...but thought it was a bit dangerous with babies climbing in things....and we have so many little toys, so that is why we have the ugly, basically toy box, as a coffee table right now.

What should I do with this wall space..... Any art?..... Move the China hutch closer to door?....

The china cabinet it fine where it is. You have more important things to consider first. You could do this for a new media cabinet/toy storage:

No, Devin, I can't really move furniture in Photoshop. Sometimes I can fudge it a bit, but to turn a chair from back to front is impossible. You could actually physically do it your room, though.

No glass table around kids.

I know it wasn't, but I felt it good to add my thought for a table with simple lines somewhat elegant, that reflect shapes in your dining room. Actually I was trying to find that table, but with time I had, I wasn't able.

With out spending any money.... Just rearranged..... What are thoughts on this?...we are thinking about the glass coffee table idea....cube storage media center....and maybe getting this new rug..... Also possibly another cube storage next to the door....

I like the rug, if it's the right size. It needs to be bigger than your current one, big enough to hold the front feet of all the seating.

I would not put any storage to the right of the door. The space is too small and that bench (or whatever is there now) looks crammed in. You seem to have enough space on the TV wall to cover the length of that wall with storage. If you need a drop zone for the front door, use the first foot or so of the TV console/cube storage for that.

I didn't realize how large your matching chairs were. I'd move them back to the window, and return the wing chair to the other end of the sofa. If you need another chair, it needs to be on the rug side of the space. It's bad enough that you have a traffic pattern in front of the TV; don't compound it with a traffic pattern in front of one of the seats.

Leave the space by the door empty. Not every space needs to be filled. The eye needs a place to rest.

For storage by the front door, why not just a row of hooks? At kid backpack height. Attached to the studs, backpacks are heavy. If you are a shoes off house, the other really useful thing could be a Hemnes shoe cupboard from IKea....the units are very shallow.

You keep putting a chair next to the TV where it serves absolutely no purpose unless it's your time out chair. It can't see the TV, and it's too far away to effectively converse with anyone else in the room.

This new blue chair looks even larger than the old wing chair. You need smaller furniture, not bigger, so you can form an actual conversation group.

The new blue chair is way smaller, narrow and deep....we sit in it all the time and have great conversation..... Most of the time...focus is not on tv....especially if someone is sitting there....

I think that we have to also consider practicality of how we live as a family.....i completely agree that this design is not perfect in terms of the definitions of interior design, but we believe this works for us....i guess what we are asking is if this looks good with the constraints of what we are working with...?

I guess my answer to that is no. You have too much too-big furniture in too small a space. Perhaps it will improve when you get a storage unit to hold the TV and are able to rid the room of some clutter, but if it works for you, that's really all that counts.

While everyone has given great ideas that make total sense on paper, I think if you were here in person, you might see what I see.... Trust me I have moved furniture everywhere and tried everything, it just doesn't make sense for our family right now....

In my reading and trying to learn about the best layout for a living room....i found something that said, basically....'The goal of any small living space is to use every area as efficiently as possible'... And with kids and their toys, I think we are doing a better job at that...?

You obviously don't have room for bulky drapes,but maybe something like a softer window treatment, perhaps a roman shade or this, would be nice rather than the blinds in the window. Here is what we are going with for right now!. I know it's not the most design perfect layout but it fits our life right now.

We are going to get a new tv and make sure it's hung a bit lower.... We are going to get coat hooks in corner, with shelf for mail and keys.... Then in other corner.. We are still deciding what to do...... but we will get different side tables.

Well, you've de-cluttered and it looks a lot better. The new TV storage unit helps. Going one size up on the rug would help some more. I would do that before replacing the tables. And I like the poufs. Do the kiddos like them?

Yes.... We don't like how it closes of that space towers dining room table.... We use that space so much to play on ground with kids!

We love it!.... This rug is 6x9.... We tried 8x10.... Didn't like it.... The kids love the poufs!! Can't keep the three year old off of them!. Thinking about getting a third... But that might be too much?
