Are all hardwood floors this easy to dent?
Comments (13)We can say it until we are blue in the face but it takes educating the homeowner one at a time to get things to stick. Lessons to be Taken TO HEART: 1. Engineered hardwoods do NOT follow Janka Hardness ratings - ignore them. Wood floors scratch - some more...some less. Janka hardness ratings don't deal with scratches - ignore them. 3. Aluminum Oxide (AO) will scratch - it just takes a bit more effort. 4. AO finishes are NOT created equal - an EXPENSIVE 9 coat system is going to outperform the 3 layer "cheapo" finish Scratches are not "quality" of material issues and are not considered "defective". 6. High-gloss shows scratches. 7. Low gloss shows "oily foot prints". Low gloss finishes can look "hazy" at certain times of the day - this is the nature of the beast. Good luck....See MoreRolling kitchen chairs on hardwood floors?
Comments (6)Felt cushions on the feet help most. The plastic ones glide well, but they also pick up grit which scratches, and if they break a little the nail which holds them onto the chair pokes out and gouges. I've had the best luck with plastic castors. I think the grit only scratched the finish rather than the wood. But I didn't like that either since the rest of the floor doesn't get that much wear, so put a bamboo mat under the chair to protect the floor. This is in a desk area, so it doesn't look bad. It might make for a tripping hazzard at an island, however....See MoreBest vac for cleaning hardwood floors & around cabinets?
Comments (61)Thank you Flash407 for bumping this thread back to page 1. Now I've got it bookmarked. One of those things I meant to read but didn't get around to. What a lot of good info. This is better than epinions! :) Have to say I too am sorry about spending $400 on a Dyson, (EVERY time I use it!) for a number of reasons. Strong suction but it ends there. However, mine is not a 'ball', so maybe that one is different. Considered the Roomba, and from what you're all saying it really does sound great, still not sure about the cat reaction though??? The other name coming up again and again seems to be *Miele*. Particularly for the canister vacs for hardwood and kitchens? (The backpack sounds cool but unfortunately my 'back' is beyond that :) Have to go check these Mieles out. Anything has to be better than lugging that Dyson around OR trying to use it's attachments. Speaking of smells...you're all lucky not to live in eastern PA. A new invasive species arrived in a cargo container in 2000, according to Rutgers Univ. in Allentown PA, called the Brown marmorated Stink Bug. They got to my area (just north of Philadelphia) a couple years ago and it's a war zone! Vacumm one of these things and the smell (an oil they can spray) will be everywhere plus in the vacuum itself for days. :(...See MoreProtection for hardwood floor from chair with metal pedestal base
Comments (8)I have installed 1/2" x 6" felt pad strips to the bases you refer to. http://www.amazon.com/Equinox-Floor-D-Fender-Pad/dp/B002CM3AC4 You should clean the bottom well first and may need to lightly sand before application. If you have a problem with them sticking, you can coat the bottom of the rim with contact cement. That should do the trick....See Moretartanmeup
