Growing Pride of Barbados from seed?

I'm trying to grow the Pride of Barbados and the Yellow Bird of Paradise, caesalpinia gillesii, from seeds. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to keep them alive? The ones that have sprouted have all died within just a couple of days. I suspect the Sphagnum Peat Moss/Vermiculite seed starting mix might have been too wet. I know these tend to be drier soil plants, but does that start in the seed stage?

Also, now that my Yellow Bird is dropping the last of its seed pods, I'm seeing sprouts of beginning limbs for next year, I guess. Can anyone tell me how to prune it? Come Fall, do I cut back back to the green growth of where those limbs are now sprouting?

Thanks for your help. I'm trying to get the Yellow Birds going so they can be given to the Vets at the VA Hospital Suicide Stand Down. Have only till Sept 25th to get them bumped up into the gal pots from their current 4" pots. All advice would be greatly appreciated.
