When are Pride of Barbados seed pods ready?

I have had a big seed pod on my Pride of Barbados for months. All searches refer to the pod drying when it's ready, but mine just feels leathery, not at all dried. Anyone know how long it takes before it's ready to harvest? I want to try propagation by seed.

I don't know about the seed pod, Pam. My cassia tree's pods did the same thing this year. They never did "ripen" on the tree, and I do not know as yet whether they will be viable after I pulled them off green. I do have two very healthy Pride of Barbados that I grew from seed.

Upon deeper research, I found that I have to be patient and wait until it pops open.

I had three of these beautiful plants in S. Texas but moved to Arkansas, (hard to believe it but same zone)! I know they make a lot of seeds, but mine were too old by the time we found a permanent home. None of them came up. Does anyone have some seeds from last year that they would part with? I would be glad to pay something for them, and the postage.

I believe these are also called Flamboyant plants, see "PARADISE FOUND" by Norman Winter pg. 27. I see these in the wild, I live in Vancleave,MS, around here mostly close to ditched. I don't know if they like moisture or just trying to evade the bush hog. I can get a ton of seed if any one would like some. I found that the seeds are hard to sprout and I noticed in Norman's book that he agreed and sugges the seeds be abraded. If I remember right the seeds are fairly small and would be a pain to abrade with sand paper. Any suggestions on that process? Thanks, Lynn

When you say red bird of paradise, is this the one that the leaves are kind of feathery? the bloom is like a yellow ballon with red strings coming out of the bloom?If so e-mail me I have seeds for that one and also seedling. Marcie_new

No, this was no mimosa. It has yellowish orange blooms similar in look to POB, but was really a huge tree. The trunk itself had a 3-5 foot circumference. If you ever get to Granbury, this tree is west of the square, in a neighborhood near the school bus depot. It has green branches and part of the trunk was a green color also with what appeared to be thorns all over the trunk. I never stopped to ask what it was, but saw one last spring at Stewart's Nursery for $99. I need to make a road trip and get pictures :-) I think it is a palo verde tree. Hi Carrie,
We must have been typing at the same time! Mine is still on the tree which mocks me from it's happy winter location in the front window ;-) This is my first winter season with this beauty.

Mine are safely tucked away for the winter, also, Pam. I plan on using them with an esperanza in the Spring, and just leave them inground. I will start more just in case they do not winter well here.

The pods will turn all brown. Soak the seeds overnight & then plant them.

If they don't sprout let me know, I've got tons & will send you some.

The pod is already brown, but feels leathery, not dry and brittle. Is it ready?

Yep, mine sometimes feel dry & leathery. Stick it on the bookcase & it should pop open. The seeds should be kind of thick, not dried out looking, and brown.
