Weed Treatment For Bermuda Grass

I tried to find a previous discussion thread I started in the forum but am unable to find it. I have several patches of dichondria, dollarwort and other obnoxious weeds that I need to hopefully eradicate before they start completely choke out what Bermuda grass I have growing. It seems like I remember someone suggesting Agri R 14(?) as a possible spray on treatment. Unable to see how to upload any pictures.Any suggestions are appreciated and thank you for allowing me to participate in the forum

My best advice is buy books on plants you grow (bermuda in this case) and/or gardening and landscaping in general. Reason being that no SILVER BULLET exists for any problem. For instance Dollar Woth thrives in wet soil so reducing irrigation and/or improving drainage is necessary along with other measures. But hey, you came here looking for easy answers so here are some. Diesel fuel will kill both,so will boiling water. Providing you have time to read labels then follow directions , Atrazine , Dicamba and 2-4-D are effective on both. I use 2-4-D in combination with one of the others when both weeds you named are present. I wish I could give you in 25 words or less what took me years to learn. If I could I'm pretty sure Texas A&M would pay me big bucks to teach ag students in one day what they traditionally have to spend months on. Good luck.

I use asphalt to kill my weeds, works faster then diesel fuel.

I hate when this happens. You may have already messed things up, or you may not have done anything except waste some Round Up, but you surely were on a path to an unsatisfactory result. When did you spray the RU on the bermuda? And why did you want to kill it? Was it a hybrid bermuda or a "wild" bermuda? What kind of grass do you want to have when this renovation is over? Bermuda again? What do you mean by early spring? I'm in spring right now, but I doubt you are. When is your last expected frost date? Is shade an issue with your yard? Do you have any watering restrictions? Rototilling and adding more soil are almost certainly mistakes. Do you have low spots in your soil where water stands for days after a hard rain? If not then you do not need more soil. If you want to create a rolling effect, then you could bring in more soil. The problem with too much soil is it washes out of the grass and over the sidewalks or roadways. I've seen a yard that had so much soil on the sidewalk that it actually grew grass. Rototilling sounds like the thing to do, but what it does is result in a bumpy surface over the next 3 years. You are much better off creating a perfectly level surface at the surface and leaving the current soil structure intact. It sounds like you have to do something almost immediately. So if you live in CA you must live in Eureka, because where else could you possibly live? And if you live in Eureka, what are you doing growing bermuda? Or do you live somewhere else in CA? We really need to know because CA is a big place. The Bay Area is a big place as is SoCal. So please be specific. If you need to kill weeds, use a herbicide and then figure out what you're doing wrong, because a good bermuda lawn doesn't have weeds. If you need a fertilizer, use a fertilizer. But don't try to mix the two for the reason listed above. If you are not fertilizing once a month with a high nitrogen fertilizer, then that's what you're doing wrong, and the grass got thin. Memorize the Bermuda Bible.

That might be the most perfect poster picture ever of one kind of bermuda invading the other kind. What you have is Tif 419. What the invader looks like is all the other bermuda - common bermuda. It looks like someone seeded the common into the Tif. The only way to get rid of the invader, if it is bermuda, is to kill the entire lawn. Does the invader get flowers on it a few days after mowing? Can you let the grass grow until it flowers and post a picture of the flowers? That will help to identify it. I don't think you can hurt bermuda with a weed n feed product. You wasted the herbicide, though, by not following directions. Don't feel bad. 99.999999999999999999% of everyone makes that mistake. Seriously. All the lawn forums tell people to just forget about weed n feed products because they won't work for most anyone. You don't get any herbicide and you don't get any fertilizer out of it. And besides, the weed you have would not be touched by the herbicide in a weed n feed. Those are more for clover, dichondra, oxalis, and other broadleaf weeds. In the future if you want to fertilize, use a fertilizer. If you want to kill weeds, use a herbicide. Don't mix the two and expect to get good results. Find the Bermuda Bible online and memorize it. This time of year you should be watering once per month unless you are catching up from a loooong dry spell like we are in Texas. I let mine go too long and am watering pretty deeply to get some moisture in the soil. Where do you live?

Killed bermuda grass/weeds w/ plastic: now what?

The Bermuda was covered for 8 weeks. We have not yet removed the plastic because I'm not yet sure if we should add topsoil or remove all of the dead bermuda first. I looked under the plastic, and all of the bermuda and weeds are white and dead.

I have Bermuda grass in Texas. When I first bought my house I used Weed'n Feed once a month for a few months, then pre emergent in the Fall once a month for 3 months and again in the Spring. After about 2-3 years the mess of returning weeds were gone and I just used more pre emergent twice in the spring and twice in the fall plus high nitrogen fertilizer.

This spring I have an infestation in a flowerbed of bermuda grass around my daylilies. Guess I could just try to dig it out but hoping to find an easier way. Had thought of putting plastic pots over the daylilies and spraying with Eraser or Roundup [carefully!]. Would 2-4-D be better? Or try Weed N Feed then a preemergent? Thought of just carefully digging the daylilies out after they blom and planting them elsewhere while I work on this bed.........Would appreciate any suggestions and thanks!

Judith, re-read previous posts TWICE then close your eyes while taking deep breaths to allow what you read to soak in real well. After 15 minutes open your eyes and ask yourself this question. "If 2-4-D , weed-n-feed and pre-emerge kills other plants growing amongst Bermuda while leaving Bermuda turf unharmed ,are they likely to kill Bermuda in my flower bed?"
