Scotts Bonus S Southern Weed & Feed on Bermuda grass

Dear all,

I am new to here but I desperately need your help.

Today I was very stupid to apply Scotts Bonus S Southern Weed & Feed on my Bermuda grass. (I know I was stupid enough not to read the instruction carefully). I did not realize that until the watering was almost done. My sprinkler system has 6 zones. When I found the mistake and stopped the sprinkler system, the zone 1 -4 had been watering for 10 minutes, while 5 min for zone 5.

I searched the forum and found that someone made similar mistakes before. And a lot of people suggested to keep watering a lot to dilute the chemicals.

Since I did not water my lawn heavily, I think the chemical stuff may not be able to get deep enough. I am wondering if I should keep watering or wait for a couple of days first and then keep watering constantly?

Any input is very appreciated!

One more question, please take a look at the uploaded picture, there is some grass spreading out badly. I was wondering what kind of grass it is and talked to some guy at homedepot to find a way to fix that. And I was told there is not much I can do except fertilizing bermuda better to strong the root. Again, any idea would be greatly appreciated!

That might be the most perfect poster picture ever of one kind of bermuda invading the other kind. What you have is Tif 419. What the invader looks like is all the other bermuda - common bermuda. It looks like someone seeded the common into the Tif. The only way to get rid of the invader, if it is bermuda, is to kill the entire lawn. Does the invader get flowers on it a few days after mowing? Can you let the grass grow until it flowers and post a picture of the flowers? That will help to identify it.

I don't think you can hurt bermuda with a weed n feed product. You wasted the herbicide, though, by not following directions. Don't feel bad. 99.999999999999999999% of everyone makes that mistake. Seriously. All the lawn forums tell people to just forget about weed n feed products because they won't work for most anyone. You don't get any herbicide and you don't get any fertilizer out of it. And besides, the weed you have would not be touched by the herbicide in a weed n feed. Those are more for clover, dichondra, oxalis, and other broadleaf weeds. In the future if you want to fertilize, use a fertilizer. If you want to kill weeds, use a herbicide. Don't mix the two and expect to get good results.

Find the Bermuda Bible online and memorize it.
This time of year you should be watering once per month unless you are catching up from a loooong dry spell like we are in Texas. I let mine go too long and am watering pretty deeply to get some moisture in the soil.

That looks like a similar problem I'm fixing. I have tif 419 that was invaded by common Bermuda. The common grew seeds that were very noticeable. I've scalped the whole area and pulled up a lot of roots. I'm going to try to eradicate the common with roundup before fixing it up with Yukon. Good luck.

There's not much information in your question HU, but I'll give you several scenarios. If you already applied it, you will know if it will hurt in 3 weeks. Chances are good that if you did not read the label to see what was safe, then you also missed the part about proper application. You may not get any herbicide effect at all if you applied wrong. But it takes about 3 weeks for that herbicide to work. If you have not applied it, return the bag and get a normal fertilizer. If you need to kill weeds then spot spray the weeds with a liquid herbicide that is safe for bermuda. READ THE BOTTLE to determine if it is safe on bermuda. If you are planning to reseed with more bermuda, you probably missed the window. Bermuda seed likes hot soil to germinate. The window is from mid June to late August. If you have a bermuda lawn that is thinning, something is wrong. More than likely the problem is too much shade. Adding more seed will not fix the problem. Either get rid of the shade or get rid of the bermuda in the thin areas. You could plant other grass types (St Augustine tolerates shade well) or you could create a flower bed there. If you were planning to overseed a bermuda lawn with rye so it will be green all winter, I suggest you don't do that. The approach works for golf courses and football fields, but not for home lawns. The professionals use a herbicide in the early spring to kill the rye, but us home owners cannot buy that chemical.

Ajones for what it is worth HALTS is a registered trademark name of Scotts Pendimethalin. Keep in mind Pendimethalin is sold by many other manufactures and not exclusive to Scotts. I didnÂt get the impression the OP was asking about pre-emergence, rather post-emergence products for after the fact. To answer your question pre-emergence is all about application timing whether it is in the fall or spring. The trick in my opinion is to remove the timing element as much to the extent as possible by selecting a product with the longest effective life. Again IMO Pendimethalin is a short lived product and the window of opportunity is very small. I am a fan of a product called AMAZE made by Green Lite. It last up to 6-months and as long as you do not get it down too late pretty much removes the timing element out of the equation for either spring or fall applications. Another product I think that is very good is as you mentioned is Dimension. It last up to 4-months, but is much more widely available to the general public from many manufactures. My Lesco rep turned me on to a few hundred pounds last spring for trial and my Son is very pleased with the results in the Landscaping business. Here is a tip: Put down two applications spaced 6-weeks apart for the most effective control, especially the spring applications if you live more toward the southern parts of the country where the growing season is quite long and extended. People here in Texas that only put down one application say in February, still get clobbered in June and July with CG right up to Halloween before it really cools off.

Okay I'm in San Antonio and moving to Bandera. Hold off on the fertilizer unless you want to use an organic like alfalfa pellets or corn meal. If you've never seen those flowers then you don't have buffalo. Can you take a picture on a cloudy day from a height of about 3 inches. If the grass has flowers or tassels or anything on it, that would help. You have not used the really hard stuff, but then you did use 7x too much, so I'd let things rest for a couple weeks. Today's herbicides often don't show progress for at least a week. If you have St Augustine, for example, 2,4-D will kill it. Applying anything at 7x the rate would probably wipe out St Aug. St Aug is a very hardy grass, but one weakness is sensitivity to most herbicides. It's weird. Let's figure out what grass you have before going crazy with treating it. If you water the fertilizer in immediately after applying, it should not hurt a normal grass. The problem comes if you don't water it and then the morning dew creates a very salty solution that will kill most grass (but not usually St Augustine - weird). If you have a hand sprayer of Weed b Gon, you could spray those dandelion looking weeds. Just spray the leaves - don't drench the soil. They might be thistle, which looks very similar before it flowers. As for fertilizing the lawn, I'd just enjoy the bluebonnets for a couple more weeks.

If you read my latest comment, that sums it up. Since my last application, I have no green striping this time after removing the Edgeguard assembly and walking at a decent rate to get the fertilizer to spread and go over the wheels. The spreader wheel is angled up, so it easily goes over the wheels, but not if you walk too slow. The Edgeguard is in the way of the spread and when the fertilizer hits it, it just drops and creates the green lines because of over fertilization. Other spreaders have a guard that drops down when needed, but out of the way when not. Remove the 4 handle bolts, pull the hopper off the wheel shaft and the Edgeguard assembly will pop off with a little force. Removed the Edgeguard lever assembly and cable and reassemble. I ran a pattern test on my paved driveway and it all looked good. The key is to walk a decent speed, too slow and you won't get the proper spread.
